Bye, Spiegel Lemming Jacket...

I've only worn my Spiegel lemming leather jacket a couple of times, and it was finally warm enough to wear as a topper on Saturday. I put it on, went to button it, and... hmm, where's the snap? I could've sworn it snapped right there. What's this ripped hole here? Where's the rest of the snap? It's still attached to the other end!

Yes, one part of the snap had ripped right out of the jacket and remained firmly attached to its partner. It's been in my closet for months that way. I don't remember this happening last time I took it off, but I guess I just didn't notice. It's a jagged, ripped, nasty-looking hole.

Good thing I only paid around $20. : (

Here's a pic. I wouldn't know how to fix it, and am not sure I want to spend a lot on something that cost so little. Anyone know how I might fix it? It looks like that end of the snap sandwiched the leather between its metal plates.

I would take it to a shoe repair place and see what they can do. I wear mine all of the time and would have it fixed just because did not cost that much and would get more wear..

Oh, that would be easy to fix. You would just need to buy a new snap and set it back into the leather.

This video shows someone taking a different snap and sewing it in -- that looks a little rougher, but basically you just need to replace that piece which is pretty easy.

Two metal pieces hammer together (one flat piece on the inside and one on the outside, the ball part) to make the snap.

From your description I thought it had made a giant rip or hole!

I think that would be an easy and reasonably inexpensive fix at a good leather/shoe repair place. Or, as Ceit suggests, it looks easy enough to DIY if you are so inclined.

Yay! I've put snaps on things before (I used to make my son's sleepsacks) so I'm familiar with the process, but didn't think of that for this! I'd need to find a larger snap, since this one won't stay in place anymore because there is not enough leather left around the hole for the snap to "bite".

Oh, good luck pastrygirl. I am so not a DIY-er with clothing. My children always had the saddest Halloween costumes.

You could get a screwdriver and pry open that snap. I would put a kind of patch or something behind the leather and then try re-attaching the snap pieces first.

If that doesn't work, then just buy a bigger snap.

Ohhh, I see. Attach the snap to a piece of something strong then tuck it into the hole and sew. (Just like in the video; I don't know why I didn't make that connection.) THANKS!

Do I need a special needle for leather? I'll be hand-sewing this.

That leather is pretty soft, I think with a strong needle and thimble you would be ok.

Hand sewing leather needles have a sharp flat triangular sort of end but I do some sewing on leather when need be and I find the trick is to use a finer needle - you might instinctively think you need a thicker one - and push the end through with a thimble on your finger. Else the needle end holding the thread can easily pierce your finger. Strongly recommend the thimble and you use one by pushing with the side of it and not the top.
