Buying skirts - keep or return?

I haven't bought a skirt for years. I have two old ones, (each probably at least 10 years old tee hee) but one of them is getting increasingly shabby (strangely enough). I bought these two on sale. Is either any good or shall I hold out for something better?

#1/2 is cotton - that sort of raised lace fabric - can't describe but know someone will know what it's called. I'd hope to wear it in Spring-Autumn. The colour is closest in the first pic. Too long? Too meh?

#3/4 is a wool/silk blend, with a sheen. Not sure about the pockets as they are at hip height and I'm a pear.

I'm a bit at a loss to know what to do. They're 'semi-styled' ie I dragged on a couple of things that I though looked ok to go with them but suggestions welcomed. Have just realised that I'm really a bit at sea with skirts so will be thrilled with any suggestions/thoughts. Not even sure what I'm looking for. The first skirt would be casual or business casual; the second could only be business casual or dressier.

I'm not crazy about the way the first skirt lays. A softer fabric would lay better I think. It's hard to assess the blue skirt from picture #3, but I really like the detail that I see in 4. Again though, I kindof feel that you need skirts with a little more movement to them.

I like skirt one and really like skirt two.

Have you tried skirt one with your denim shirt Polly? The fabric of the skirt reads spring summer to me so I would love to see it with denim or white.

I think it's a good sale haul.

I think they're both fab and you can work a number of looks around them. I agree with RoseandJoan that #1 is more spring/summer. There will be so many options for tops once the weather warms up: loose, silky prints, tank tops/camis under soft, belted shirts, tunics bloused up with statement belts... very nice - very versatile!

#2 is fab - I love the color, the fabric, the cut. A relaxed silk blazer (or boyfriend jacket) in a bright contrasting color such as daffodil yellow or fushia, over a cami, would be stunning, to my eye.

Thanks so much. Kim - that helps me to adjust my eye to what these skirts do and don't have. Julie - that's great thinking. #1 is quite muddy as I've styled it and I'll try it with white and the denim. #2 is Hobbs and hugely reduced so I'd be pleased if I could make it work but won't keep unless I'm certain it won't be an orphan.

Deb great thoughts. Lovely ideas about the blazer with #2. I don't have anything like that but will do some experimenting...

Gosh, those skirts are gorgeous, Polly. I love them both but really love the striking color and cut of the blue one. It looks great the way you have it styled. The purple is very nice too--looks like it would be a great summer skirt. I like that kind of subtle pattern. Nice purchase, Polly!

Oh good! Thanks for the positive feedback. I don't want to keep things unless they'll really be useful, even if they are on sale. The purple one was very cheap, though, so I'm happier to take a chance on that.

Here's my shopping rule: if it doesn't make me do a little dance, I don't need it. They're lovely skirts, but it doesn't sound like they make you do a little dance.

Di, great point and you have made me think about it. I think I feel like that too with most things I buy these days, but skirts I feel as if I need a bit more practice on! The first is well made, comfortable and cheap enough not to mind and the second did make me feel excited when I put it on (but I needed some hand-holding!).

Thunalata, I can understand that-- I felt the same way when I finally broke down and bought skinny jeans. And NOW they make me do a little dance. Good luck with these lovely pieces!

I like both skirts. The texture in #1 would be great with tights and a sweater for cold months and a white shirt and necklaces with a sandal in warmer months.

Both are great! The first one looks like a great spring/summer skirt. The second is really gorgeous and glamorous--beautiful!
