Button up shirts under sweaters

Hello,

I know this has been popular for a while, but I would like to wear a sweater over my button up dress shirts for work. I always feel, though that the buttons are showing through and the shirt looks bumpy underneath. When I see other women wear it, I don't notice it. It this just part of the look or are there ways to make wear this look without the bumps? Thanks for your help!

Perhaps the other women you see are wearing a faux look. Its simply a sweater with the collar & cuffs of a button up shirt.

I know!! That same exact thing drives me CRAZY!!! I went out and bought some sweaters that are a little more substantial because ALL of my sweaters were fine guage. Unfortunately, being top heavy, chunky sweaters don't flatter me very much.

Does anyone remember "dickies"? False collars that you wore under shirts. I wonder if they still make them.

When I started wearing button downs again this summer, I felt that they must look bumpy under my cardigans -- but I always got such good reviews when I posted photos on the forum, that I finally decided I was being too critical. But it does depend on the sweater -- I don't feel comfortable with really fitted sweaters over a button down, those I save for camis or tees.

I think the lumps are always more noticable on ourselves than on others. Also, the fit of the button up shirt and the sweater are key. The button up shirt must be fairly close fitting, and the sweater can't be too close fitting. THis will help some.

Wow, thanks! I am new to this website and it is nice to know others stress about the same things I do! I think it may be a mixture of not getting the right sweater and just being overly critical. Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated. And, I don't like the idea of the faux ones, although they do look good, for some reason I just can't bring myself to buy one.

I think it has a lot to do with fit. I also find that it's easier to get a smooth look with a very lightweight button-front shirt (I have a couple from Gap which are hard to wear on their own because they are thin and wrinkle easily, but are perfect for layering). Another trick is to accessorize well... scarves and necklaces that are well-placed can help to distract the eye and make your look more polished.

And look for button-fronts with very thin buttons. I once tried layering with a pearl-buttoned shirt and that did not work at all! I had bullet points down my front. Some buttons are bulkier than others, so add that to the list of things to watch for in a button-front shirt.

One more thought: are you letting the shirt peek out at the bottom? I think it's cute, and it also somehow helps with the issue of the shirt being visible under the sweater, as it's more "meant to be" a layering look if that makes sense.

They do still make dickie-type things. I wear these fake half-shirts under a lot of things.

The one is a button down.
