Funny, I donated the last of my heels from my working life, just last week. I had kept them for “in case”, but hadn’t worn them in over 15 years.

I'm not giving up a couple pair either. I'd like to try the Cole Haan pumps with Nike technology. Word on the street is that a well designed heel, with an excellent fit, can help. No more than 3 inches anymore, though!

There is one pair of Anne Klein pointy toe patent shoes with a 1 inch heel in my closet for just such a purpose. I will probably own them the rest of my life-keeping them as insurance for just such a purpose.

I have a few pair of fairly high heels for exactly that situation. But NM is like LA - no one walks around here. I always get dropped off at the restaurant door.

To all you who feel emotional connected to shoes and other items you don't wear any longer and hesitate to let go: How about taking photos of them before you pass them on and use the space for items you'll actually wear?

On that note, yeah... they’re pretty hard to get to, all being in under-bed storage. If I could wear them, I probably still couldn’t get to them in the sort of time I allow myself for dressing...

I'm with Angie. Go for fabulous, pretty dressy flats. You never know when you will have to stand an hour in a buffet line or reception or walk a mile to get to the car because your companion wants to walk off the meal

I have a couple of 3 inch heels that I'm not giving up on (I wear 2 inch for work regularly). They are both in the category of "I probably shouldn't have bought this" (I bought them in my early YLF years, so they'd be at least 6 years old) but come out a few times a year. I don't have a lot of shoes by YLF standards and I have room to store them. Since I wear running shoes for my commute to work I could actually wear them for work a bit more.

It is so interesting how some of us hang on to things! While I have never been a "shoe" person, I still have a couple of pairs of pumps from corporate days over 15 years ago.

Last winter I pulled out a pair and leather-painted them from a muddy brown (Angelus leather paint worked pretty darn well, although requires occasional touch up) when I didn't want to spring for a burgundy shoe that I would only wear with one pair of pants and very rarely.

And I recovered the ugly rubber heel of another black pair to bling it up for similar reasons. I convinced myself the block heels from 20 years ago would pass muster. And I did wear them and felt fably frugal.

So now I only have one unretouched vintage pair left (a navy pump with a 2.5" heel). I should probably donate.
