I'm with you, Mo, in feeling ambivalent about the Burberry check/tartan. The pattern is trademarked (although not legally so in some countries such as China) and has been associated with the company since the 20's when it was used to line the company's trench coats.
My feelings about wearing the check/tartan as an accessory, though, are really colored by its association with a particular football subculture--often called "chavs" in the UK. To me, the check still looks fine when it is used in its original purpose as a lining, but I can't shake the association when I see the check in a hat, scarf, belt, or other accessory. As this article in the Economist points out, though, the "chav" association isn't global, so the accessories still sell well in other countries.

While the real product, like Angie's scarf, is definitely high quality, I'd rather spend my funds on something that isn't quite as identifiable. But that's just me, and, as Angie says, horses for courses. And Anna is right about the plethora of fake Burberry items in the market.
