I've been searching for a purse for the last couple of months, and I think I've finally managed to find the one I want. I'm pretty inexperienced when it comes to the various practical pitfalls you can run into with a purse though, so I wanted to see if anyone had experience with bucket bags that close with a drawstring and if they work reasonably.

I'm a bit worried about the fact that the closure is a drawstring instead of a zipper or something more secure. I suspect that the bag is going to involve a lot of rummaging around to find things inside of it, but I'm not super concerned about that because I own a lot of small bags I can use to organize it (and which I'd use to move things between purse and messenger bag anyway), and I'm used to rummaging around my current messenger bag and backpack anyway.

I haven't had a chance to look at the bag in person to see how it feels on me or if it's too big (it's considerably larger than the other bucket bag I looked at), since it's sold out everywhere. I put in a pre-order request, so hopefully I'll be able to grab one!

I love a bucket bag and have never had an issue with the drawstring.
The only issue is the rummage, what you need is always at the bottom
This one looks great and I love the idea of the little attached purse. I always clipped my keys to the inside of the drawstring so as not to have to fish for them

Angie steered me away from a bucket bag last year due to practicality issues.

Jacky - I do have security and orgainization concerns but you have to decide it they are valid for you. If you like multiple pouches to keep things contained - although if it tips over your could end up chasing you stuff. But ingress and egress would be easy. Would you consider a backpack? same drawstring but better closure. But only you can decide what calls for you. If it's works for you needs and wants if does nto matter what anyone else feels as long as you are happy with the pluses and minuses!!

Debra: oh, hooking your keys on the drawstring is a really good idea!

Anna: what kind of practicality issues did she mention?

gryffin: the security thing and it tipping over is definitely the main thing I'm worried about. I'm hoping the drawstring pulls tightly enough that if it tipped, things still wouldn't fall out. Unfortunately, I'm likely to be using this with a backpack, and I want to store things in it that I need easy access to (like my bus pass), so a backpack wouldn't work very well for me.

As others have mentioned,my issue with this style is the tendency for everything to end up at the bottom of the bag, and it's hard to find what you need.
That being said,this is a beautiful bag, and if its returnable,worth trying at home.

Yes, the rummage is a problem. I've never had a bucket bag, but any soft, unstructured bag without interior sections does the same thing: mushes everything up together. A little more structure is really helpful.

I take the bus a lot too. I like bags with outside easy access pockets, or even just a slot for the pass.

It's gorgeous! My current favorite bag is huge and generally open (it has hooks to kind of close, but I only use them when shopping so someone can't just reach in). No problems with rummaging because I use the little Longchamps bags to hold cash/cards/checkbook and makeup/supplies. The only thing I worry about is my phone, so I keep it in the zipper pocket.

That bag is gorgeous! The simplicity of the styling is just super. I hope you're able to grab one and give it a test run. I've never used a drawstring-top type of bag, because it seems like it would be real pain to undo the strings when I need to get in the bag. The closest I've come is this bag. Mine actually came from Zappos, but I can't find it on their site. I have the dark brown one shown on the model (pic below). The toggle closure is easy to unfasten and refasten, and my things don't fall out when my bag topples onto the floor. The interior/exterior pockets and key-per are handy so I avoid rummaging in the checkout line etc.

I like the bag too. I find the simple solution to losing the small stuff or items you use regularly is to put them in a smaller make-up sized bag so all those items are readily accessible without digging. I love the look of a structured bag but find the bucket style works better for me.

I love the bucket bag too - I definitely use a more "bucket" bag day to day when I'm toting my big files and stuff around. I use the "small bag inside a big bag" system that a lot of other YLF-ers have mentioned.

I find transferring things from bag to bag a lot easier too.

Really beautiful bag. I haven't used a bucket bag in many years, but I never had a problem with things falling out if the bag was cinched very tightly. From the photo it looks a bit loose. Love the detachable wallet.

I have a bucket bag that is a beautiful green but I have not used it in several years because of the rummaging issue. It is a pain.

kkards: I haven't checked with the seller yet to see if they're returnable, but given the price and demand I usually assume that they are. Thank you for reminding me that I should check!

April: Oh, I hadn't thought about how the softness of it might make the rummaging issue worse. The bottom looks pretty solid to me, so I'm hoping it keeps its shape reasonably.

Anna: I'm thinking about keeping my bus pass in the little detachable wallet. Either that or hoping that my actual wallet will be easy to find inside. This is probably a good way to motivate me to keep my purse uncluttered

Carter, dianthus, lyn: Yeah, I've become a huge fan of the small bags for organization thing - I used to trail charging cables everywhere I went before I started doing that! I'll definitely look into the small Longchamp bags - I hadn't actually planned out exactly where I would get a few more if I needed them, so thanks for the tip!

Jewell: I'm definitely worried about the toppling over issue, and I'm not really sure how bothersome the drawstring is. If it ends up being annoying, I think it's likely that I'm at risk of just leaving it hanging open, which would make the toppling a problem.

cuffcat: Yeah, I can't tell from the pictures how tight it cinches. I looked at some pictures of people using it, and it looks reasonable, but it's hard to say.

It sounds like I'll need to stuff it full of things when I get it and see how hard it is to find stuff, which is about what I expected. I'll also check the drawstring and how it works when it tips over. Thanks so much for all of your feedback!

Jacky, these are the ones I use. I found them at the Off 5th. I love the handle. So easy to just grab the one with the money/cards to run in somewhere without taking the whole purse.

I love that style of bag. I've always used a purseket or similar handbag organiser, so that all of my "necessities are organised at the bottom of the bag. The depth allows for carrying extras such as a drink bottle, a small cardigan, or perhaps a little bit of shopping. I never buy a bag to carry full, but with enough room to spare for "extras" but that might be a mum/mom thing!

I have a medium one. It's brilliant, because you just coil it around in the bottom of any bag - works in satchels, hobos, backpacks etc. A great way to keep organised, and especially good when a bag lacks internal pockets. I haven't investigated other versions really, but there are plenty around
