Brooke Shields in Old Lady Dress?

So, Brooke Shields is one of the Beautiful People that I actually agree is beautiful. Anyways, I saw a pic of Brooke in this dress... admittedly it was a different pic than the one I've referenced... but my first thought was why is Brooke wearing this old lady dress? I felt like she really should show some skin.

It's weird tho. Because I've seen the relatively young Kate Middleton in such a dress and she didn't look like she was wearing an old lady dress. And Tilda Swinton, who is close to Brooke in age, her dresses like this don't look old lady.

...And now I wonder if it feels old lady to me on Brooke because Brooke is American...

I want to see the back of the dress, because you never know, it could be cut down to never never land! I like the look on her though, and she has the body to wear it!

Isn't that odd? Because I LOVE this dress! Although.. I'd love it even more without the embellishment at the side. I think it pulls the gaze away from her beautiful face.

But you're right - this doesn't make me say WOW... on Brooke. Is it that she's curvier than Kate or Tilda? Her figure looks beautiful in this dress... huh.

I'm stymied.

ETA: maybe it is because on Brooke, this feels like a 'safe bet' dress. whereas we're all accustomed to seeing Kate in super-conservative clothing, and Tilda in just about anything.

I can imagine Helen Mirren in this dress. But Helen isn't 'old lady' to me.

With her figure, I don't read old lady. But this is not what I am used to seeing her wear, I agree.

I went searching and can find no evidence of anything happening with the back of that dress, though I did find a dress to compare it to with someone in her age range (maybe?). I think this is unflattering on Judith Light. Same basic style though.

I think her hairstyle is too severe for the dress and that makes it look dowdy. Also while I realize it's a body skimming dress there doesn't seem to be any fluidity to it. Just looking at the picture it looks like she'd have to mince around shuffling her fee just a couple of inches for each step. I agree, I'd love to see what's going on in the back of the dress.

I have to agree, Deb, that in this pic, the dress doesn't strike me quite as old lady as the first pic I saw.

Belle, you may have a point there about Brooke being curvy. Minimal dress, minimal body - they perhaps build intensity all in one direction. Minimal dress, curvy body - just not the same dramatic build up.

Oddly, I like that orange dress on Judith. I like the turquoise contrast as well. Orange and blue always makes me think of sunny days in Florida.

Oh, but you're right too about Helen Mirren, Belle. I'm sure Helen would rock this dress. So that returns me to my Brit v. American theories...

Also, I have to agree with everyone who mentioned the embellishment. I'm not sure what to make of the embellishment. I thought about that. It's just sort of there, pasted on the dress. On the other hand, all the sparkle and some visual figure shaping is going on there.

Also have to agree, Michelle, the dress doesn't seem to be flowing. The seams are doing something stiff and funny over the bust.

Von, I'm not sure what to make of the red dress. Lol. I kinda like it... but I'm imagining it as a "waffle-weave thermal dress." I think that would be kinda cool, esp. with some platform kicks. Lol.

I think the dress is absolutely killer stunning and I want it. I think Brooke looks beautiful in it too, as would Kate Middleton, Gwen Stefani, Beyonce, Kate Moss and Helen Mirren. Unfortunately the white back drop is wrong for the frock - and if anything is taking away the wow-factor - it's that.

My two cents: I am always happy when I see a middle-aged woman actually looking drop dead gorgeous without the need to let it all hang out. I have seen enough barely covered private parts to last me a life time.

I have to agree with cade. I very much appreciate a woman of Brooke's age (and my age) looking fabulous without exposing too much or attempting to compete with women half her age. She looks gorgeous and stunning, IMO, without anyone having to wonder if she's wearing underwear (and whether the cameras will catch it).

Tolda Swinton is interesting in a lot of ways because she has never read "young" to me. She doesn't read "old", either. She almost comes across as ageless and androgynous to me no matter what she wears, which can be a really interesting look.

And a lot of people had a really hard time getting used to the fact that Kate is going to dress like a royal, which includes taking things up a notch as far as modesty goes. There were a lot of people complaining about her looking "too old" at first when people began adjusting to her modest style of dress.
