Bridal shower outfit? - YouLookFab Forum

My niece is getting married, and I am heading to her bridal shower in Providence, RI this weekend. It's at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning. It had been a looong time since I'd been to a bridal shower when I went to one last year. I wore a black Martin Margiela jkt, a Prabal Gurung t-shirt (very colorful and quirky floral), black slim pants and boots to the last one and felt totally out of place, as all the others (much younger than I) were wearing cute dresses and high heels. So, in the interest of not sticking out like a sore and melancholy thumb, I picked up a nice wool knit dress today. It's sleeveless, so I need to wear a jacket over it (old lady upper arms). So the picture below shows how I am thinking of styling it for the event. Is the jacket the right length? I have lots of black jkts and sweaters, so maybe I could adjust. Also, are the booties too much for an old lady?

The booties look good with the dress and on you. I can't speak for old ladies in general :-). I think I would try a cardigan with straighter or softer lines, but I am better at critiquing than proposing.

The dress is great on you, and I love it with the booties. The jacket looks terrific with it, but it might read a little more office than social event. Do you have something like a shrug or short cardigan? Or how about a short jean jacket or leather jacket? (Would that be too casual for this event?) You could wear just about any color, I'd say. Red would be fun. I think the proportion is going to be more of the deciding factor, probably. And this jacket would totally work--I'm just wondering about other options.

The booties are fine but I agree with Sharan - I think this looks a little too office-y - do you have some other toppers you could try?

I think the booties and the dress look great on you. So does the jacket, but since it's a spring bridal shower, it might be that there will be a lot of lighter/brighter colors in the group, so a lighter topper in a white or pale gray or really any soft or bright color might be an idea to try out, and casual formulations like a leather or denim jacket or cardigan as Firecracker mentioned. It might be that paler or nude or sheer black hose work better with a lighter topper, or might be great as is with just that one substitution.

Yes-it's perfect- so why not wear it with the booties! A cream jacket and sheer hose would be also great!

I'd like to echo what rabbit said, and add that a bright color cardigan like pink or yellow might work well too, and give it a bit more "spring-y" vibe. You rock those booties!

It looks great as is but could also look great with a light or more colorful topper if you have one and feel like trying it.
