Bra Fittings

I went to Nordstrom's on Thurs and had a bra fitting. I feel so much better and fell that my tops look a lot better. I recommend it highly. She took me up a band an cup size. The band I'm still surprised by but the cup fits so much better.

Slightly OT. Why is it so hard to measure yourself for a bra? Even with instructions, it's still confusing and you can get three different results with three different efforts. No wonder so many of us are walking around in the wrong size!

The reason it's difficult is because you shouldn't be measuring yourself!

In fact, I don't like the idea of measuring at all. In the first place, it usually demands that you measure youself wearing your current bra...which is silly, since your current bra probably doesn't fit. Second, there are a lot of factors that aren't taken into account. It only takes into account your overall measurement...not how it is distributed.

I never measured myself to find my clothing size--just tried stuff on until i found something that fit. Same with bras. Measuring can be an ok starting point, but too many people rely on it as the definitive answer and don't try on (or even have access to) a good enough variety fo sizes. If I relied on measurements, I would be a 32D rather than a 30FF. When I was smaller, I measured out to a 32B when I was really something more like a 30C or 30D.

Maya- that's really interesting. I guess it shouldn't be surprising. My measurements don't often match my clothing size on size charts, so why should my bra size.

I'm with Maya on this! If I relied on measurements, I would be a 32B according to the woman who fitted me in M&S this October. 32B don't fit me that well- I get 'quad boobs' and the band which fits for the first two months ends up getting way too loose and support ends up coming from the straps. Instead I ended up trying a 30C in December. The band fitted snugly then and still fits now. This, in itself, is a revelation! I am somewhere between a 30C and 30D, dependent on brand, material and cut. Now I am looking over a range of sizes when I try on bras from 32B (has to be a tight band), 30C, 30D and 32C (both for the monthly bloating).

At Bravissimo they do a quick measurement, but only after they've seen how your current bra fits, and ONLY of the ribcage. Cup size is always done by eye, and trial and error. When I went for my first fitting there, my fitter just measured my underbust (which is 29) so she knew to bring me both 28's and 30's. How she figured out the cup I don't know- they just really know bras, I guess!

Oh, and if I went by the stupid measuring method, I'd be wearing something like a 34B, instead of a 28F/30E.

So here is an odd bit of information: My under bust is 27 inches. But I wear a size 30C by Chantelle perfectly (granted, Chantelle runs small). I have been the same size for years and years and nothing has changed in the boob and rib cage department (apart from in the instances that I was pregnant). There is no science to bra fitting - it is a complete art. There is no bosom and bra fitting similarity between us!

You know, I don't find Chantelle to run small at all. If that were true, then the 32's I was wearing should have fit, but they were apparently too loose. One of the bras I just bought was a Chantelle and I needed it altered to a 30 and possibly a 29. I have tried many styles (Divine, Africa, invisible tshirt, Body Sculpt, C-Chic) and all of them seemed quite TTS on me. Boobs are as unique as fingerprints, I guess. That's why I don't bother with bra reviews.

Debbie, do your new bras feel right on you? I hope that you are happy with the fit. Nordstrom's is a good place to get a bra fitting but they are not perfect. They do sell you what they happen to have in stock, just like any other store. If the bra isn't perfect, it should go back. I took my best friend in CA to Nordstrom's for a fit. They told her that her size of 36 B was an "unusual" size, that couldn't be found. What kind of crap is that? It hurt her feelings, made her feel like an oddball, and Nordstrom's sales clerk tried to make a sale of what was in stock.
After Oprah says on her show that a certain bra is her favorite, everyone rushes to buy one. How many people have Oprah's exact build? It is an art for sure and we are all different.
It was only a few years back the sales people didn't measure us at all. We just tried on bras until we found one that we wanted. The problem with that method was we would just keep asking for the same size over and over instead of trying on different sizes and brands as our bodies change.
Sorry Debbie, saying "bra fitting" here really opens up a can of worms doesn't it! HaHa!

That's awful San. 36B is "unusual"? What rubbish. That is a remarkably ordinary size. I had the same reaction from a girl at Victoria's Secret and never went back there again (after finding YLF, I realize I shouldn't have gone there in the first place).

I used to go to a pretty nice bra place here in my home town, but last time I was there I was surprised to see how much it had changed. I used to be fitted by more mature women, and suddenly the entire staff seemed to be high school students. I'm sorry but 16 year olds haven't even had boobs long enough to know anything about fitting them! The girl I saw insisted I was a 34 and that my 32 bra was too tight (which is obviously nonsense, since it was actually too loose). She kept measuring me over and over again, telling me that I measure as a 34 (even that isn't true--I measure out to a 32). She then brought me back a 34DD strapless bra, which kept sliding down my ribcage on the tightest hook. But hey, the measurements say I'm a 34 so it HAS to be true, even if the bra ends up around my knees.

Sigh.

Bra fittings are very tricky. I am usually measured to be 32/34 B, and neither of those fit well for different reasons. 32C is by far the best fir, and I only got to know that thanks to some great fitters at Nordstroms. However , outside of Nordies and specialty lingerie stores I get frowned upon for wanting such an "unusual" size and they always try to get me into 34B. Sigh...
