Bra fitting (urgh) and a question for Maya

Thanks to Maya, I went for a bra fitting at Intimacy in Boston last week. My suspicions were correct - I need a 30 band. The annoying part is that I apparently need a 30D size, which seems very odd to someone who till 2 years ago wore 34A ( till Nordies put me in 32C) and thinks of herself as very small chested. I mentioned this to a friend who I was trying to convince to go for a professional fitting and she nearly doubled over from laughing. She said something along the lines of " You? A D? You are basically flat!" which made me feel like some kind of impostor. Anyway, I found a couple of 30D ( Calvin Klein) in another store to try on, which fit very good, better than my old 32Cs, so I guess it sort of makes sense, although I still can not wrap my head around it.

I have a question for Maya ( and anyone else familiar with this matter): Would it be OK to just take in the band on my existing 32C bras? Or it is not the same thing? I sort of can not afford an entire new bra collection at the moment.

Your friend just doesn't understand how bras work! You are not as small chested as you think you are. I think you are just right! If I were to have reduction surgery, the equivalent of a 32C is what I would aim for. I feel it would be ideal on my small frame, and you have a small frame too, so you are perfect the way you are.

Anyway, you can absolutely get the band taken in! In fact this is the only way I can find a bra that fits. The range available in a 28FF is very limited, so all but one of my bras are actually 32E's that have been altered to 28's. Since a 32C is the same as a 30D in the cup area, altering the band should work fine. However, Intimacy only alters bras that you buy from them, so you will have to find someone or somewhere else to do it.

One thing I'd add to Maya's advice is to make sure that the cup alignment of the 32-band bra fits you properly if you're going to go to the effort of tailoring the band. Sometimes the underwire/cup shape of bras with larger band sizes - the 32C - can be wider or more spread out to the outer edges of your rib cage, whereas the underwire might be positioned in a slightly narrower position if you were to get a 30D in the same bra. The cup volume is the same, but the cup shape might be slightly different.

You might not notice it at all if you are only buying one band size up from what you would normally wear, but I just thought I'd mention it since you have a small frame and probably want to avoid rib bruising from having the underwire go too far under your arms.
