Boy clothes: What was he wearing when you first met?

And what were you wearing?

Annagybe started a thread about dressing for dating. If you are/were in a relationship, what were your memorable first-time outfits?

Me:
When I met the boy he was fresh off a train from Denmark, where he had been painting in the country. Hideous pleated pants, puffy double-breasted blue coat with a contrasting collar, and the worst(!!!) grown-out Abba haircut to his shoulders. I was wearing Benetton head to foot (this was in Italy), probably a wool t-neck and leggings with a long wool trencoat, and crazy boots. I looked a lot like a boy, with sprocket-esque wire-rimmed glasses and cropped hair.

He had a cute smile and was funny, It all worked out. Also, he now owns not a single pair of pleated pants.

Fab thread IK! And I'm glad to hear he has no more pleated pants.

Mine is easy - we took the same class in college and met when I was 19. The first day I saw him he was wearing faded Levi jeans and a bright cobalt short sleeved tee. I was wearing faded Levi jeans and a bright pink long sleeved v-neck tee (my favorite tee at the time). We ended up sitting beside each other in the orientation class and the prof promptly said "you two go so well together - look how your colors are". Little did we know...

40 years ago and I couldn't tell you. I was too focused on the conversation. And in those days, few in college weren't in the denim uniform.

He was wearing a white fencing uniform! (I met him on the Varsity fencing team when I was 19, in 1996).

I was wearing some pale high-waisted legging/pants, and probably a T shirt of some kind.

He was wearing nice boots, a military jacket of some description, a patterned shirt and probably jeans.

I was wearing purple corded flares, a pale blue PLACEBO t-shirt, a green German army shirt and Doc Martens. Not particularly feminine.

We're getting married in August.

One in the eye to all those who say you have to dress conservatively and prettily to catch a man, eh?

Darn, I don't have a photo of him (I can tell you he looked fab in breeches and socks!). Here's me later in the year after I had bought my gear.

Greg was 18 and I was 17 - and it was 1987. Greg has always been into fashion and looked very stylish. He wore faded baggy blue jeans with a red brown belt and matching Doc-like-boots, with a tucked and wonderfully distressed blue long sleeved shirt, and draped a cream Irish aran jumper over his shoulders. He has gorgeous curly hair - and lots of it - very short in the back and a mop of curls on top. I looked into those icy blue eyes and I was finished. It was love at first site.

It was 1990. He was in a band (the singer, Velvet Underground and post-punk power pop inspired songs) and was wearing a chambray button up with Levis and buff colored low roper boots. Adorable! I can hardly remember what I was wearing, but I think it was a very brief Betsy Johnston shirt with strategically placed roses, a short flippy skirt, knee socks and mary jane creepers. I actually didn't set out to date him. He took my friend on a few dates and then she suggested that he would really like me. So I got a hand-me-down boyfriend and first rate husband.

This is too funny! For us, it was 1990 and he was wearing Wranglers, boots, a pastel striped button down shirt, a denim jacket and a baseball cap. I was wearing dark "stretch jeans" (the first of their kind I think), an emerald green T-shirt, huge gold earrings and white canvas slip on sneakers.

Oh,these stories are great. You all were so young! I didn't meet my hubby until we were in our mid 30's. We met at a ski resort. K is a snowboarder, so he was wearing a matching ivory jacket and pants trimmed with red and navy. Did I mention snowboarder? Both pieces were HUGE on him!

I was wearing shiny, cobalt, in- the boot stretch ski pants and a fuscia anorak trimmed with cobalt. Um, it was the '90's.

Wow, you guys have really good memories.

I met J. in early 1999; it was winter and we were in college, so I'm guessing he was wearing some version of jeans+sweater? I don't really remember though. I was most likely wearing the black pea coat that every single girl in college in New England had at the time.

This is a great thread and I love the stories.

We were at a swim party and both had on bathing suits. That was almost 30 years ago. We only started dating 5 years ago and married 4 years ago.

My boyfriend was wearing jeans, T-shirt, and sneakers, which I think is the sexiest thing a man can wear, aside from maybe sweatpants. And you better believe I would think twice about dating a man depending on what he is wearing. It's not about the price, it's the style and fit of the clothes that matter to me.

I was also wearing jeans, T-shirt, and sneakers... relatively baggy ones since I had recently lost a bunch of weight.

Let's see, I think he was wearing a striped t-shirt, pants with an elastic waist and reinforced knees, white socks and oxfords. I was wearing a red plaid full-skirted dress with a white Peter Pan collar, white anklets and Mary Janes.

The year was 1960, and we were 7 years old. We got married 40 years later.

What a fun thread!

The very first time I met my guy, I was actually someone else's girlfriend, so I wasn't really in the market, so to speak. I do remember thinking he was cute, with his dark curly hair and big blue eyes, but also that he looked very, very young. We were both 18, but he looked barely fourteen. Style-wise, all I remember is that he was wearing a ball cap over a grown-out mullet. What can I say? It was 1990.

We didn't meet again until the last year of university. He had grown up. By that time he had hair past his shoulders, longer than mine, and dressed like a cross between a surfer and a tree-planter. Keep in mind that this was British Columbia, at a very left-leaning, granola university, at the height of the grunge era. I can't point fingers and giggle because I'm pretty sure I looked just the same.

I love the stories!

I remember almost exactly, which is interesting because what we were wearing was not very remarkable -- we were both in our 30s and didn't wear anything too out of the ordinary. J was wearing jeans and an oatmeal colored sweater with a rip in the shoulder, and boots, I think. I was wearing bootcut jeans, a paisley blouse, and a black leather moto that i still own. It was 1997 and we met in a bookstore cafe, literally 24 hours after my previous relationship had broken up. Lucky for us!

I met my husband when he flew into meet me (I was living in the midwest at the time and he was on the west coast) - so, I picked him up at the airport. He was wearing a brown suede jacket, light blue shirt which looked great with his eyes, and jeans. I can't remember his shoes. I had just come from work - so I was in an 80's style suit - huge shoulder pads - deep turquoise trimmed in black - with a black (right below the knees) pencil skirt - and black heels. I know that this sounds shallow - but, I really checked out what he was wearing and if he had been in something that was hideous, I don't think I could have seen beyond that. I had some dates (before I met him) with a couple of guys that I immediately ruled out because of what they wore. One of them showed up with ripped jeans (and this was long before ripped jeans were in "style") and dried mud on his shoes. No thanks. Another guy showed up in a suit with tie - which was OK, but he always showed up in a suit and tie - and I think it really represented his personality - he was conservative and conventional - and so we made a very poor match - it didn't last long!

P.S. - I think that an "accidental" meeting is a completely different thing (when talking about dress) than a planned meet-up/date with a guy. One, is spontaneous and un-planned, the other assumes that you've both taken some time to consider how to dress/present yourself to the other person.

Anyways, apparently, I have *man brain* and only vague memories. We met in the office break room. I have an impression that he was wearing his fuzzy grey Izod fleece jacket, long-sleeve pocket knit shirt, jeans, running shoes and short hair - all very neat - but this could be projection, as it's his formula.

Btw, let me make it clear, his style is the #1 reason we spoke at any length. Severely plain and neat. I would never date anyone as frivolous as myself. Never!

Also, I'm very sad that the fuzzy jacket had to be retired - it made him nice like Teddy, my stuffed bear when I was small. Hehe.

I was probably wearing one of my little short office jackets (Marc Jacobs military peplum?), trousers and moderate heels. Pretty, fashionable, but not so fashion forward. Trousers were probably flared or bootcut. No doubt this was lucky for me, because off-work - well, my mode of dress says "more than you can handle." Hahahaha!

My BF and I first met in 1998 at the middle school Valentine's Day dance. We were both 13. He was wearing khaki pants and a polo shirt. And HUGE glasses. I was in a short velor green, blue and gold stripe dress and big glasses.The only thing that's changed is now his glasses are stylish. And he's past the awkward teenage years.

We met in university where we were both poor students. He wore jeans and some kind of sweater, and he had a white canvas coat, which looked very weird to me. But he had long curly hair and nice blue eyes, and he made me laugh, so the tacky coat didn't matter much in the end. I was sewing all of my clothes at that point and loved mini skirts and hot pants ( short shorts ). I think he probably noticed my legs first and then my superior intelligence and wit ...

He was wearing a tan pin stripe suit with, I think, a double vent. For all I know, his then girlfriend may have picked it out. What really made an impression on me was his very nice refined brown leather dress shoes. The men I worked with at the time all wore the thick leather soled black dress oxfords. Can't really remember what I was wearing, it may have been my gray pin stripe Redwood and Ross gabardine suit, with the thin silk bow tie that was a popular office wear accesory in the 80s. I *loved* that suit.

When I met DH, he worked in the arcade next to the record store I worked in. He was required to wear a uniform, so he had on pleated black pants, a white dress shirt and a skinny '80's style black tie. I was wearing a short, swingy dress that he remembers he could see down the front of because he is a foot and a half taller than I am. I had no idea at the time!

Oh, and he had a bad mullet. Yikes, I married him when he had a long, shaggy mullet (that he later grew long)!

Oh, I almost forgot the thing my husband was wearing that is no longer part of style at all -- his glasses! He had those dark-rimmed Navy-issued eyeglasses that he dubbed his "birth control glasses." He got lighter wire rim frames some years later, and then went for LASIK surgery a few years ago, so no more glasses for him, except for readers.

It was my job interview in 1988. We would share the same boss in very different roles. He wore a tight fitting grey leather jacket, a plaid cowboy shirt with snaps, jeans, cowboy boots, bolo tie. He wore that uniform every day.

I was wearing my "interview" suit, black striped skirt, linen blouse, wool jacket. June in Houston, no AC in the car, I must have sweated like a pig.

His colleagues preferred someone more endowed than I, rather than skilled. He hopped up and down in the boss's office, I heard later. Much later. I got the job. We started dating semi-secretly a few years later, then skipped town to Utah together, after I said in my best southern accent, "darlin, I love you but get me the hell out of here."

He doesn't wear bolos much any more. The leather jacket disappeared. Jeans and boots, despite the dress code. They gave him an exception because he's from Texas.

We met at a dance club, I was wearing a LBD and he was wearing a black shirt and dress pants.

The dress still hangs in my closet, I cannot bear to get rid of it because I'll never forget the night we met and my life changed for the better.
