It's good to see you again! I don't think the outfit described sounds boring. Classic maybe. Having a uniform that you're happy with is smart, not boring.

Nothing wrong with a uniform....

There are ways to tweak things if you are bored - new nails, new hairdo, new lipstick or even a new winter coat.

But you may not need to either.

Have you tried metallic shoes - I like pewter with navy and black pants for work.

Your outfits sound OK and not necessarily boring. But if YOU find them boring, how about adding some variety to your standard "uniform"? On different days, you could wear for instance:
- a skirt or a dress (for added warmth, wear it with opaque hosiery and/or boots/booties)
- a blouse or a button-front shirt
- some kind of woven jacket or a moto jacket
- a different kind of shoe
- a scarf or a shawl, perhaps in non-neutrals
- a necklace or earrings, perhaps in non-neutrals

You’re not allowed to refer to your outfits as boring
There are a zillion cardigan possibilities, and a zillion pants possibilities, so it’s just a matter of wearing those.
And then, sometimes life is busy and it’s not that important to wear something amazing everyday, and if your clothes fade into the background, that’s fine too.

Uniforms are good! I have a uniform of sorts: cardigan, shell or blouse, dark pants, closed shoes. I spice it up with earrings, scarf or pins.
Weekends are similar. Turtlenecks in winter. Tees in summer.
I like to get jiggy with my shoes: prints, loud colors, metallics.

You are wise to stick to good quality pieces and a comfortable uniform that works for your life. You can always use them in new ways when you want to tackle that project. Your outfits are not boring! They let you and your abilities shine.

I totally live in my bakery uniform... leggings, mini skirt apron and top. In fact, I bought 7 Orange Victoria Beckham scallop pocket skirts, so it’s now the only mini skirt apron I wear (giant-phone pocket). It is so much so, I got asked twice yesterday at the hardware store for help from customers! Lol.

But hey, the mail order girl tried to find the skirt on eBay and the cafe boy said ‘why is it you always looks so cool every day!’

If you feel like you want to spice things up, maybe you could add some accessories? A nice scarf, some statement jewelry, a cardigan in an unusual color or pattern...or if you're happy with your basic uniform, just carry on.

Hi Thistle, are you happy or unhappy with your dressing? I have a kind of uniform as well (in Winter it's woolen pullover/pants/closed shoes almost all the time). Nothing special but I appreciate that it's very practical. I agree with Gigi's suggestions.

I have two, maybe three silhouettes that I rotate through. If you are bored, you can add one more silhouette. If not, I think there is nothing wrong with your formula, it doesn’t sound boring to me. Most days I wear Jeans, a knit top, and some sort of shoe or boot. I add whatever third piece makes sense and accessories. The other silhouettes provide variety.

A uniform by definition will always be consistent - and therefore lacks the element of surprise. Does this mean boring? I don't think so... I actually quite enjoy being a uniform dresser myself. My work uniform:
- dress (or skirt and blouse combo)
- jacket
- boots or shoes
I do eat the same breakfast every day too - I kind of like not having to make decisions about some things.

Honestly, I'm not terribly upset with my choices.

When I first joined YLF, I tried a lot of different styles, and I ended up mostly back where I started. Been donating a lot of the stuff I bought in that first frenzied rush.

I don't do dresses or skirts even though they look better on me. Too fussy for me with two kids and a less-than-dress-friendly working environment.

I dress for warmth. I live in cold temperatures, and my office is cold. I dress for comfort. Ponte knit trousers or something equally comfy, warm sweaters, and knit toppers.

Just doesn't make for interesting topics

I hear you on the dress/skirt thing. When I taught at the college, I could and did wear lots of dresses and skirts -- even though I was more "dressed up" than those around me. It worked well, actually. Now, however, working as a therapist in people's homes, I spend half my time lugging instruments in and out, taking my shoes on and off, and making music on the floor, or the couch, or at the kitchen table. And a pencil skirt does not work when one has an african drum between one's knees!

Good quality clothing that fits well is what's needed to present yourself well professionally every day. That kind of consistency is also important to elegance and style! Glad to know that your "uniform" is working for you!

Thistle - we're in the same stage of life and I'm finding that a uniform is comforting to me. Mine is turning out to be much the same as yours except I can wear jeans to work. Jeans, cardigan, sweater & boots. I've been experimenting with jean silhouettes but honestly think I'm going to go back to the trusty boot cut. I'm also trying to add a few blazers since there are so many good ones this year. But I haven't found one that meets my comfort requirement yet. I think I'm going to put a shopping ban on myself for a few months and try to focus on accessories since those fell by the wayside when I was having babies. Someday our stage of life will be different and we may want to spend more time with clothes. This is what I keep telling myself when I think I might be getting boring!! Plus kids clothes are so cute and so much easier to fit!!

- this is one blazer that is in the running to keep since it has a lot of stretch and is almost as comfortable as a cardigan.
