Boots with elastic gusset

Something about this look always looks too casual to me, or maybe frumpy - like a sports gear kind of thing, or maybe too much like a comfort shoe. But I know a lot of you wear boots like this and that they can be quite dressy. Is my eye the problem?

I think it's necessary, otherwise it would be hard to walk in. That boot probably goes above the ankle, you need flex somewhere.

Nope, I don't see those as gear or ortho Granny at all.

I associate these with mod so much that it overcomes the gear connotations of the elastic. These would be adorable with a little shift dress - boy mod meets girl mod.

I agree with Una, these are a variant of the standard riding boot (horses) and that's what I think when I see it. I keep those boots for riding!

I'm on the fence. I've seen several boots with this feature that I liked, and I was thinking that the elastic meant that it was more likely to fit my leg without being either too tight or too gappy. But I haven't been able to decide whether the elastic makes it look orthopaedic.

Of course, I'd probably end up wearing something like that with a pair of pants anyway, so it might be a moot point because you'd only see the toes!

I've had the same thoughts in my search for booties that don't have ankle gaps so I can wear with dresses and skirts. I don't think they're less dressy, but I"m just not sure I want to show exposed elastic even though I know those are the only ones that will not gap for me. Sorry no help.
