Boots: to buy or not to buy? - YouLookFab Forum

(Disclaimer! My first attempt at a post. I'm such a newbie, so excuse me if the links are all messed up.)

I have resisted buying shoes, well specifically boots at NAS. I live in Texas where autumn is essentially non-existent and winters are very mild. I have three pairs of tall boots: one black pair with about 2 inch heels that I wear with dresses and skirts, one black, low heeled that are very casual, and one black brown 2 inch heeled that are skirt/dress boots.

After looking at Angie's picks and then Sveta's picks, I am so torn!! I really like these two, but do I really need another pair of boots?

I've been looking at these Frye Veronica Boots for a while as well.

Ideally, I'd like a nice, good quality pair of boots that I can dress up or down, preferably in a cognac color. The quality of these boots are significantly better than what I currently have and would probably last much longer (hopefully). But do I really need another pair of boots? I don't know, maybe I'm getting too caught up in the NAS fever. I'm torn ... thoughts?

I am not sure about the climate of Texas; but if winters are very mild, would a pair of booties be more versatile for you?

I vote booties, too. Angie has been talking up the gorgeous Donald Pliner suede oxblood pair, which I'm afraid to buy because I live in a "four-seasons" area of the country where light clouds can turn into soaking rain in the matter of hours.

My first thought also, was a bootie. They are a really hot trend right now - much more than the knee length boots - and in your climate it sounds as though they'd be perfect!

You're actually pretty fortunate for boot wearing! In MN, I can't wear really good boots after the snow and slush comes -- unless I carry them to change into and that I'll only do with shoes.

While the ones you linked to are lovely, the Blondo and your current low heeled black boot might be too similar? and you don't need weatherproof, do you?

Cognac/warm brown would be another great direction. I'm thinking cognac trendiness might have peaked, but the gorgeousness of a rich cognac leather will never go away. . .so those Miz Mooz might be a nice addition.

Thanks, ladies, for the advice. I do have a few pair of booties that I wear with slacks in the winter (grey suede, brown pleather and black pleather). I don't know if I can pull off booties with dresses or skinnies (which is the look I'm going for). I'm pretty short (5ft0) and I think it just cuts my leg line too much. I did look at those Donald Pliner boots, just don't know if they will work with my shortness.

MNSara, you're right, the Blondo would duplicate my low-heeled boots. It can be rainy here, but not so much in the winter. I think I'll take that one off the list.

Maybe a mid-calf boot? Like an engineer height. That will be much less stifling in the heat. I'd also hold out for cognac if that is you want - none of the ones you linked look cognac-y and different from your current dark browns/blacks.

You could go for some faux leather boots in some bright colors like white, pastels, off-white which would compliment your mild weather and also keep your toes warm. Winter white maybe.

I agree with Rae that a mid-calf boot might be the way to go - I find them the most versatile out of all my boots, to be honest, especially on milder but still cool days.

Hmmm, never thought about mid calf boots. I'll need to try some on and see how they look. Thanks for the suggestions, ladies. I think I was getting too caught up in the NAS frenzy. Thanks for setting me straight

Aren't mid-calf boots even more truncating of the leg-line than booties? Is there a styling secret I'm missing? (I'm 5'2" with short legs and I've always avoided mid-calf boots for that reason.)

KL, I thought they were truncating too, but did you see Diana's post about the frye veronica boots and how she styles a mid calf boot? They look good on her. Of course, I am much shorter too. I don't know. I think I just need to try them on. I may go to Nordstrom tomorrow to try them on.

By the way, I am only 5'3.5"! I do have proportionally long legs for my height, but I really do not think the mid-calf boots are truncating at all. You have to experiment a bit with different shaft heights to find the sweet spot on you. For me, it's right below where my calf starts to quickly get wider.

You can also play around with lower contrast colors to get a longer leg line, either nudeish tones or something like black boots + black tights. Here's a couple more of my WIW photos with this height boot, including my taupe low-contrast ones.
