I also heard the interview; it's a sobering reminder that choosing what we put in our wardrobe can have unexpected, and sometimes deadly, consequences for others. I might be put off by pills on my sweater, but the knowledge that the same garment could be a health risk for another puts my choice into a whole different context.
To be fair, it is probably important to distinguish between different types of manufacturing processes before and after garments are created, and between closely related fibers, before making a decision to eliminate them from our wardrobes. While choosing a "natural", organic cotton might seem like a better alternative, the chemical and physical treatments applied to the fiber as it is transformed into fabric and then into a finished garment can quickly negate any "ethical" benefits.
