Bold glasses for me??

So I will be shopping for new eyeglass frames since my current ones met with disaster. They were feeling less than fab with my new grey hair anyway, so perhaps it was the fates letting me know the time is now, LOL.

We passed Oliver People’s today while walking around the city, and I tried on a bunch of frames, many of which were well out of my comfort zone. Both the SA and my husband were enthusiastic that I can indeed pull off something like this.

I have to say, it’s totally counter intuitive to every instinct I have when it comes to glasses. I have always kind of wanted them to disappear on me. I never think I look as good in glasses as I do without them, and I don’t think I look as good in glasses as other people do. But again, I’m trying to challenge my old perceptions and choose something with more intentional style. Hubs and SA actually argued that the low-key glasses are more aging than something with more presence.

These were a favorite, and I don’t hate them, which is to say they grew on me as I tried them. It would be an adjustment.

What do you think? These may not be *the ones* but an idea for a direction to pursue. My hair is a mess — rainy day and mucho humidity, ugh.

I'm a glasses-wearer too. I did gold wire rims for a while, then the kinda narrow oblong ones (early 2000's), then decided to go for the gusto. Not quite as far as Iris Apfel though. In other words - I went "intentional."

Since you are in NYC - one frame-maker I've heard a bit about is Moscot - a fifth generation maker.

Your dh and the SA may have a point about going low-key. These are here, present and alert(!)

Yes! If you’re not ready to commit right now, try Warby Parker or Zennis for less expensive versions.
I have gone to more “statement” glasses as I have gone gray. As Sloper said, intentional.

I like the statement frame on you. The colour and shape of the frame are great. The thing that makes me pause is that it looks quite heavy, and so I would like to see you try something similar but a bit more refined for comparison.

It may well be that this chunkier style is best, because there is something very cool about an intentional frame, which does suit your style. This is a wonderful baseline from which you can compare different frames.

Yes -- I always like to see multiple options to compare, but I like the idea of bold for you. Some people seem to look great in 'disappearing' type glasses, but I always feel they make me look and feel mousey. Not how I want to be perceived. I really like the strength of these and I think you carry it well. Colour is great.

I think the right pair of glasses sort of brings your face into focus. They just look right with your features and neither overwhelm your face nor disappear into it. I think the glasses you are wearing in the photo do that.

I have no rules or method for finding such a pair - I go for trial and error and the guidance of an attentive sales associate.

Yes I like them too - I would compare with a few others. But these are definitely contenders.

The frame is the right size, and I love the Oliver People’s quality, but I think it’s a bit too heavy for your features.

I love them. Maybe this is not the ultimate pair, but definitely a great direction. I am with your husband and SA that the intentional bold frame is more you and more stylish than the trying to be invisible type.

Try the Lower East Side: Moscot for frames, small Scotch and Soda for shopping, the Essex Market for treats, including a terrific spice merchant, the Tenement museum for immigration history and hundreds of choices for lunch! The Moscot customer serve is excellent.

I like them! I do think the more statement styles look more intentional and modern. If you can afford it, why not buy 2 pairs. One more statement, one more invisible. That way you can wear according to mood.

I agree you can carry a statement frame, and that it can definitely look less aging than a lighter “invisible” frame. Not sure these are the ones but you should definitely explore similar frames.

I have both kinds of frames myself because sometimes I *don’t* want the frames to be the first thing people see. Just a thought.

What Bijou said. Or something to try at least. Dark frames, in the black or blue, navy or similar cool palette, not wire or frameless, but maybe a little thinner.
And depends some on your prescription, ( though you can’t get a trial run of that) , which adds distortion.

Ugh! You are reminding me that it will soon be time for eye check-up and the new frames/specs search. I like my current frames from December 2019 so much, I just might get the lenses replaced.

Bold works better than those invisible ones, IMO, though I think the pair you show is a tad large. You want a bit of brow reveal, and for the bottom part of the frame to not touch your cheeks, the nose piece to be between your eyes (not lower or higher.) I always do the smile test with bunched up cheeks, IYKWIM, in order to test the frames. Otherwise eyes look centred in the lenses with these ones, so that is good.

This pair makes a fab statement and looks great on your face in general, but I would like to see a similar pair with somehow less material in the bridge area only.

Love a bolder frame on you! And, I agree with Jamie and the SA. At least right now, I think acetate frames look more modern while the rimless styles are a more conservative choice.

I definitely, absolutely think you can do statement frames but I think these are a little big - I, too, remember Angie’s advice about not covering the eyebrow.
I’d love to see you in something blue or black - more you?

Janet, I have the same thinking as you. I have always had to wear specs and never wanted to draw attention to them. I have mostly worn contact lenses since my 20's but since covid that was not such a good idea for obvious reasons. My specs for the last 20 years were silver rimmed. With my hair going silver I felt like they were making me look even older than I am and insignificant. So I took the plunge and got 2 new bold frames, one in a burgundy wine color and one in purple/lilac color. I love them. What a difference to the way I feel about wearing specs now. I may give up wearing contact lenses completely. I think you would look lovely in a teal pair or some colour that contrasts with teal, or other colours in your wardrobe. Black can be a bit harsh as we age though.

Yes, you can do it! I understand the wish for the glasses to disappear and not be a part of your look. As I embraced my own gray, I began to think I was disappearing. I thought I looked colorless. When it was time to update my glasses, I went for thicker frames in bolder colors. I began to think of my glasses as another accessory, not just a necessity. The more intentional frames really enhance my eyes. You have gorgeous eyes! Why not showcase them?

I like the direction, definitely. I think you can pull of statement glasses for sure as you have a bold style and confident presence. Maybe check out a few other options before deciding. I’d love to see something with a just slightly less chunky frame, I think.

I've read the comments above, I see the "chunky" factor, I still like them. I especially like that while bold, the shape is roundish. They also look very well made.

You might want to have more than one pair for variety and even more importantly, because the weight of statement glasses might mark your face if worn often or for long periods of time. Maybe you alternate with contact lenses?

Fun direction! They really do make a statement. I always love specs that do that. I think Bijou is right -- this is a fab place to start and then do some comparison.

I think they are sensational as a SECOND pair, but not as your only and default pair. Definitely try to get them too - budget permitting

I am in total agreement to go bolder (vs. more "invisible" frames)! These are definitely bold and they fit you well and look chic, IMHO. I really like Angie's idea of having a few pairs to sort of play around with. Since I dropped contact lenses a few years back (I have extremely dry eyes, so I could no longer tolerate them), I have purchased a few different pairs. I have a pair of relatively bold tortoise shell frames, and a pair of navy wire aviators--I think wire rims are coming back into vogue, right alongside bolder plastic frames.
