Boden dress arrived and will go back

Somehow I didn't have much success with online shopping recently. The Boden dress arrived half an hour ago and I had to try it on immediatly. But this will definitely go back. The colors are much darker than the picture suggested and it looks totally different. It also is too long on me (length, waist and sleeves). The petite may have been better, but I don't like it enough to try it. I also don't like the material, it is much thinner than I thought and very stretchy.

My sympathies, Astrid. I've never had a Boden dress work out. They always look so lovely and chic on the website, but in reality there is always something "off" about the fit. Too boxy, too long, stiff fabrication.......

Good for you for knowing when something doesn't work.

Oh, how unfortunate! The dress does look like a size or two too big on you, but you have a such a winning smile, which is what I noticed first, even b4 the ill fitting dress.

Oh wow, the colors do look different from the picture in the catalog (which I always have handy)! I have only placed one order with Boden, for a dress, and I loved it, except the colors were also way, way off. I also returned it - made me look very washed out. I've noticed that seems to be one of their biggest complaints from customers on the site - misrepresented colors. I know sometimes it can't be helped, but come on, Boden!

Anyway, sorry it was a disappointment - it's not you, it's the dress! I think you'd look good in a petite version, for what it's worth, but there are many fish in the sea.

Oh it is close but no cigar. (Sorry I noticed I am using a lot of odd expressions lately around here. I hope they translate.) The style of the dress is absolutely lovely on you, but yes, the colors look much darker and the petite may have been better.

Thanks Nancy. I recently ordered the first time at Boden, so I didn't have much experience with their cuts and so on. I still have that one striped shirt on the way (returned the grey and ordered the navy) and I did like that one. It was lovely - this dress not so much.

Thanks Preppy Pear. I think I would have tried the petite version if the fabric would have been nicer, but not when it looks like this. The two things I ordered before also weren't as pictured, both looked a lot lighter and cooler on the website. It think that's really unfortunate, but like you said it seems to be recurring problem.

Thanks Scarlet! I agree that the idea of the style is great. I think I'm putting a patterned fit and flare dress with better drape on my wish list.

My 2 cents worth, since we're both pretty pears, and this dress seem to tick a few of those boxed on my "no" list. I've found that V-necks don't work for me - they draw the shoulders in, which makes the whole silhouette look totally off. Personally, I prefer round or square necklines, in any case wider, plus I have preference for higher necklines too.

Also, as hard as I tried to find a dress in softer fabric like jersey, it is simply too much tee-shirt-like, hence can't keep nice shape AND does not hold that pretty flared shape that the skirts on such dresses tend to have in the ads / catalogues.

Look at it this way - this is another lesson in what does not work Equally useful as what does work for you. Off to something better.

Thanks Ornella! You might be right about the neckline. I've never thought about it, but the only V-necks I'm wearing at the moment are very deep (like a buttoned cardi) with a square top visible underneath. I guess button downs don't count? I also like scoop necks and boat necks, although the latter can make me look heavier than I am in the wrong fabrication.

Bummer! You are way to fab for this dress. A thin knit fabric doesn't do anyone any favors and it's too bad the color was misrepresented. I hope they'll pick up the postage and refund your original postage as well.

Too bad about the dress, Astrid. I've seen a lot of Boden in person and I think it's somewhat overrated--cute designs but the fabric quality is not so great.

They also don't do free shipping or returns.

I went to Boden's site because someone here asked about cropped cardis, which they have. And the US site ALWAYS seems to be out of stock on everything. How does that happen?

Thanks Una! Yes, that silhouette is nice. I will keep looking for something similar. As for everything being out of stock, that happens on the German site too! When I first looked at the dress I found some more items I liked and maybe three quarter of them weren't available, the rest was all "coming back in 10 weeks" or whatnot.
