Blazer help... Lost - YouLookFab Forum

Hi all, I have a need to wear a blazer for work 4-5 times a year. I have a black one (part of a suit) that I have never been totally happy with, mostly because I felt like it didn't come in enough at the waist. However to be honest I hadn't put it on in months.

Today I went out shopping for a replacement and came home with a jacket from BR that I liked in the fitting room. When I put it next to the one I already own, it was practically identical but with one button instead of two... Which I actually think is a downside. What a goofball I am!

So, here are
1. My previously owned jacket
2. The new BR jacket (going back, just posting to show ridiculousness of purchase)
3. The full suit with the owned jacket
4. Owned jacket with another skirt

I need feedback on 1,3, and 4. Is my eye right that this makes my rectangle self more rectangle-y? Should I continue my search or try some tailoring? What do you think of the length?

I have totally done that kind of thing before, and sometimes not realized it until after the tags are off, so you're doing better than me... I actually like the BR one a touch better, since it's a tiny bit longer, but not enough to suggest you keep it! I like it as the suit, I don't think it looks boxy, but with the other skirt which is less pegged at the bottom it's a bit straight up and down.

Have you considered a less traditional blazer shape, maybe something Chanel ish or a collarless style? I think it might work well with your figure and be a bit more modern and trendy, if that's of interest.

Thats kind of funny... but I agree you know you like the style when you buy it again! I really like 3 and 4 both. I dont think the jacket needs further tailoring to nip the waist but I am not a super expert and enjoy a boxy blazer personally. In #1 I am trying to pinpoint what doesnt work as well to my eye as 3-4, and I think it is that the jacket is perhaps a bit short for pants with the tucked shirt underneath. Maybe try an untucked shirt that has a hem about 2" - 3" or so longer than the blazer hem when wearing with pant outfits.

That blazer fits you very well! For some reason it does look much better with the skirt it came with than the pants. It makes you look quite slim. If you find that it doesn't nip in enough (a common problem that I have as well), you can have it tailored. It's not the cheapest alteration, and I wouldn't trust just anyone, but it's an idea. In the meantime, I would say that this blazer is totally acceptable, and you can keep the search for a new on on the back burner until you come across the perfect fit.

Ha! I was just talking to my sister about this. I should be banned from buying any more black jackets.

I am by no means an expert on jackets... have a black jacket struggle myself that I should post for help. But what I see here is that it's a bit short for pants, but perfect for skirts. The coloum of colour created by the suit is very flattering, but I also like it with the grey skirt. I don't think it needs altering. Perhaps look for a longer one to wear with the pants?

Thank you all for the replies! This has really helped me figure out that this is fine when paired with the skirts, I just need to stay away from wearing it with lower rise pants. Amazing what a few pictures and objective feedback can do... And now I can spend funds someplace other than duplicating what I already own!

I think you already have a winner on your hands and can safely return the new one. And you are right - allocate the funds elsewhere knowing you have great taste.

It looks as if you're sorted about the length of this one on you; works with the skirts but not with low-rise pants.

I'm not 100% sure but it looks as if it might be loose in the bust area. Ultimately, you might be looking for one that fits better there. But again, I'm not sure if I'm seeing the details correctly.

I'm with Suz. The jacket fit is not 100%, judging from these photos. I would head off to Express to try their stretch jackets. I have a hunch that they will fit better.
