Black or burgundy for winter coats?

Hi all! I'm hoping I can gather some of your collective wisdom on the subject of winter coats. I'm in the market for a new short, casual puffer jacket and will also probably be replacing my slightly dressier coat. Hubby and I were shopping recently, and I tried on a few of each in both black and burgundy. I am drawn to burgundy very much, but I'm not sure if it's just because it's a trendy color this fall. My husband, on the other hand, voted for the black in every case. He said the black looked younger, hipper, and more timeless as well. I questioned him on the "younger" comment, because looking younger isn't necessarily one of my goals in life! I think he explained it away as just having a "cooler" vibe or something.

I guess I'm wondering if burgundy has the staying power of black, or if it will likely look very dated in a couple of years. I do think both colors looked pretty good on me. I wear black pretty well, but I do think burgundy is just such a lovely color for fall and winter.

Any thoughts?

I don't know, but I've always loved burgundy. Black is so commonplace, if you ask me. The style would determine the cool factor, in my humble opinion. I can't wait for Angie to weigh in on this.

I think if you suit burgundy and genuinely like it, it won't date. It depends what you wear in terms of bottom halves and footwear. However I would probably not get both a puffer and a wool coat in burgundy, just me, I prefer to mix it up.

Black puffer jackets are worn here by all ages from tweens upwards. They are very very popular!!

I don't think burgundy will date.
There are certain shades that are browner and some shades that are more purple, and some more red.
I would be careful that the shade looks good on you.

I think burgundy is a solid choice as long as you feel it goes with the rest of your closet. Maybe by "younger" he means more "current" in that it used to be everyone just bought black coats to "go with everything" and now we're all more willing to mix colors.

Burgundy can go in and out of favor. My highschool colors were burgundy and white. Everyone wondered who would have picked burgundy as it was out of favor at the time. The school cheer squad decided to call it red instead.
Personally,I love to see some color in a sea of black puffers, but black may be more versatile if you need the coat for a variety of situations this season.

I feel like everyone has black. Burgundy is traditional but a bit more interesting, so it could be a good choice as long as the color looks good on you.

I am a big fan of burgundy. It looks very interesting amongst all the black. There are lots of shades of burgundy to pick from.

Since we're talking a dressy coat, I'd consider what you're likely to wear under. Maybe your dressy outfits lean one way or the other more...

Black! I love burgundy, but save it for the clothes underneath the puffer. A burgundy puffer will make you look like one of those genteel ladies in deep middle age who judge show hunter competitions.

Thank you for the thoughts everyone! Since I have a fairly small coat capsule, I need every piece to be a workhorse. I think that's why I've always tended to go for neutrals. Not that colors couldn't be workhorses. Just that they may not have the versatility or longevity.
