Black and navy: Yay or Nay?

Today's Washington Post has a fun article about how mixing black and navy is the latest fashion hack for those wanting to look chic while traveling: https://wapo.st/49KYvgc I was delighted to see it because I have black travel clothes and navy travel clothes and have always felt like that was a flaw in my travel capsule. But from now on I am considering it not a bug, but a feature. I am a yay. I do it regularly. But I do think about it - for example I would not wear a suit with navy pants and a black jacket in the same fabric - I would make sure it looked intentional.

Here’s last week at work. Tee and shoes are black and the pants are navy. I would wear either a black or navy bag here but in the end chose rust.

I love navy and black together and would definitely wear it if I wore black, which I almost never do. However, I do wear charcoal and will wear navy with that. I also combine a very dark ink navy with lighter, brighter navies, which is similar to pairing navy and black.

I don’t mix black and navy, I know it’s a silly rule to follow and that it can look great. I seldom wear black. I have a cream blouse with abstract white, navy and black flowers… I guess such a print could be used to tie together solid black and navy pieces?

Absolutely! I think it looks sophisticated and I personally wear it often. I don’t like to wear black and brown, though.

Even though I don't wear black and navy together, it's a definite yay from me. They're both neutrals, so they pair well IMO.

Hmm I’m not convinced by the WaPo story. I get the need to travel light and be fashionable, but didn’t see how those needs connect to pairing black and navy.

Yay! I have a bunch of each for summer and even a bag with one side that is black and one that is navy, however my navies do not match.

I love this BUT it must be the kind of navy that looks like blue, not the kind that looks like black until you put them side by side. Then it looks like a mistake.

But more of a deep midnight blue with black? Definitely.

Absolutely YAY! I don’t often wear black, but I do like black pants and wear them a lot with navy tops.

I actually prefer black+navy to total black or total navy outfit, it feels more polished to me this way. When paired together, I like black and navy to have different textures though, it looks more intentional.

Along the same path - love optic white+off-white outfits - white and very light stone or white+eggshell.

The combo I have troubles is black+very dark brown.

I’ve always loved black and navy, though IMO it should be a bright navy, or French navy. I’ve worn the combo often over many years, dressy, casual and in between.

I'm a yay, as I love it on others...Sal's rendition is a great example of black and navy worn well together. I don't wear black and navy together often because I don't have much navy in my wardrobe except in dressy work suiting. The closest I get is dark denim with black.

Think I’m a qualified Yay. I didn’t do it for years, not aware of a “rule” against it but might have picked an unspoken one up subconsciously? I am still a very matchy-matchy person. In 2018 I bought an interesting transitional weight top on sale for $60 which has very dark navy embroidered flowers on it, on a black background, and I wear it with black pants, so that helped to overcome my aversion to wearing the 2 colours together. I am wondering if the top feels a bit dark now for some reason? But I have worn it 54 times so it’s not much over $1 per wear. The kind of thing that I worry if I let it go because I am a bit off it, that I might suddenly wish I had it again. This is a perennial problem for me! It’s still in perfect nick.

A firm yay! I don't wear much black and only on the bottom, but black pants and a navy top is one of my favorite looks. Very French!

YAY! Fun reading Mary! I do like black and navy together, but as April mentions it has to be the "kind of navy that looks like blue, not the kind that looks like black until you put them side by side". Adding a tan or rust bag like Sal did (and mentioned in the articles), looks fantastic.

I was just looking at these shorts, they're black and cream. I was wondering if I could get away with wearing this blue shirt with the shorts or would that look mismatched (not in a good way)?
