Birthday sunglasses: yay or nay?

I have an impossible time figuring out sunnies. Don't understand shape, sizing or styles. I do love a cat-eye and the crazy green of these Kate Spades which I asked for in mint.

What say you, Fabbers? They are a present from DH but since I picked them without trying, he knew they might go back. And if nay, can anyone explain sizing in glasses? These are 56mm - what does that mean?

I added a normal pic as I think the close-up iPad selfie is a bit distorted. In the second photo, I actually think they look good, and I really love the style, color and bit of edge they give. But be honest, because I don't buy lots of sunnies!

They're big - but sunnies are supposed to be big. 56mm is the width of the lens. I like them on you, but if you're petite and have small features they might overwhelm you. If you check out the website "What I Wore," Jessica Quirk wears huge sunglasses.

They look a bit too big and wide to me but at the same time I like them. I think there's a trend of huge sunglasses right now and I'm still adjusting. They are definitely fashion-forward!

I like them a lot! I am a big fan of enormous sunglasses. I look for the biggest ones I can find (I have Rx ones so there's a limit to how big the lens can be, sadly.). Anyway, what's the point of sun protection if it just gets in from the sides?

I agree with Denise. They are a little big, but that is a look, as Karie says. I'm a little sensitive to glasses being large because I have such trouble finding the right fit. They are really cool though!

Most people couldn't carry these off, but I have to say, I like these on you. I think with your new hair they look great. I'm wondering if this is the new look in sunglasses.

I love big sunglasses and the color of the lenses on these is amazing!
The big "eyebrow" sort of echoes the collar of your jacket.
They're big, but not over the top, imho.

They look a bit wide at first glance, but most people (presumably) won't be peering at your disembodied head. They might be fine at a slight distance. I like the concept!

I think sunglasses can be big. I like these a lot. My sunglasses are approx 55mm and add the frames and they are big (see #1 before I had my hair cut) but I think that is the point of sunglasses. If you like them, and they are comfortable I say keep. I love how the white trim works with your grey.

I like them quite a lot. They are wider across the top and the contrast between the frame and lens may emphasize the width but with sunglasses, it isn't as big a concern. With clear glasses, it looks much better if your eyes are centered in the lenses. I love that with sunglasses, that isn't a concern for those of us with small faces.

I think they look really nice and have that edge that is part of your style but you have to love them to wear them and glasses and sunnies are such a personal choice it is hard to advise. I think they are very nice on you.

I think they're fantastic, the sort of thing that can inspire a summer look in all kinds of directions. But the deal breaker for me is performance in strong sunlight. Are they decent lenses? Can you drive in them?

I think they're absolutely fabulous! Love the color and the fit. Like Shevia said, nobody is going to be looking at your disembodied head! I like the slightly oversize look and think they really, really for you and your style. I vote keep all the way

And FWIW, my Wayfarer sunglasses are 55mm and I like the oversized frame and lens for good sun protection.

So these are not for driving - I have old prescription glasses for that. They are really just for fun when I don't need my prescription glasses. DH actually really loved them, which is surprising as he's pretty conservative. Thanks for all the input. My very fashionable 18 year old niece says "Never too big!" which tells me what that age range thinks!

Angie and others, if these go back should I be looking for a 54mm lens? Cat-eyes generally seem wider, but I don't fully get how sunglasses work in terms of looks.

In the closeup pic I thought they looked way to wide but in the further away picture I like them. No help at all I know. I too do not understand sunglasses at all. That's why I usually buy a $20 pair. Someday I'll get grownup sunglasses.

They are a little big but if they're not hard to wear I don't think the over size -ness is more noticeable to the observer than the boldness of the style overall. If you can find the same look in a smaller size, great, if you're comfortable with them the way they are they're fine with me. Definitely a head turning look.
I LOVE the lens color on you for sure, and I LOVE your hair.

I like the color. Like others, I think they might be a bit wide for your face. I think that cat eyes are not exactly subtle & that you can find that they are limiting, so I would think that, while you might like this pair in addition to others, you probably don't want them to be your only pair or your most expensive pair.

I think they are a bit large, yes. The mm sizing will be different depending on the style, a bit...can't be absolute and have to try them. Alas. I think the colour is really cool!

I think they look a bit too big. If you want smaller but still insanely green, check out Illestevas. I have green mirrored ones in a tortoise frame from last year.

Una (and Debs), it's not the size that bothers me with these sunnies. It's the WIDTH. Debs' sunnies, despite being large, are much narrower and fit her face.

I want to love them; I really love the colour. But I have a poison eye for glasses where the frame is not consistent around the lens, so the plastic on top and metal on the bottom just doesn't coordinate to me. Additionally, they look wider on your face than on the model, but that may be due to the angle at which the model's pic was taken. However, the distance shot kind of erases all that, and I think they do look fab in the last picture. Given that that is the way most people will see them, I'd vote to keep - especially if the hubs loves them.

I think they look a little big, but that is part of their appeal, part of their style. Kind of like an oversized top is big. I don't think they look *overly* big. I think that with the trend toward large sunnies, these will fit right in.
