Birthday sandals and kilt - YouLookFab Forum

I got these lovely sandals for my birthday. I have been looking for low wedges that don't look like "grandma sandals" for about three years, so I'm very happy. They are Coclico, a brand I was introduced to last year via a pair of short boots that became the ultimate wardrobe workhorses. I have high hopes that these sandals will be as useful. The only problem is that the toe strap is a bit pinchy, but I'm assuming it will soften up? I have a shoe stretcher but I'm hesitant to use it because I don't want to over-stretch the strap.

I also got something I've always wanted but that will leave most of you scratching your heads: a utility kilt. (Mine is black, not olive, but it's easier to do a quick image grab than take my own picture and upload it -- uploading from my phone always brings my computer to its knees!). I've passed that utilikilts shop in Seattle a bunch of times as always liked non-plaid kilts (even though they're technically for men) so my husband got me one. What a sweetie. It looks awesome with steampunk boots. It's far too hot to wear it now but I'm looking forward to fall. Hopefully it doesn't look too ridiculously masculine. The good thing about art school is that you can wear whatever you damn well like and no one bats an eye.

Now THAT is a skirt I'd wear! Seriously, the couple of skirts and dresses I own spend most of their days in the closet, but a utilikilt would be a totally different story. Love it!

The shoes are also fantastic. I've resorted to pounding toe straps with a mallet to soften them up--works because I can just soften the strap without stretching it. Put a block of wood where your foot goes and a towel over the strap to protect the finish and pound away.

I have a female friend who has a utility kilt-- and so does my SO. I think they are fun. The wedges are really nice looking-- I hope they are comfortable all-day shoes for you. Happy Birthday!

I have never seen a utility kilt before, but that is FABULOUS. Love it.

Kind of reminds me of when I was about 10 and I wanted a fishing vest. Not for fishing, but for the "fashion" of it. Something about all the pockets, I think.

Oh, I can't tell you how much time husband and I spent drooling at the Utilikilts store in Pioneer Square. I LOVE those. The sandals are great, too! All thumbs up from me!

Lol, I'm surprised about the positive feedback on the kilt! Thanks guys. I really like it and hoped it wouldn't look...odd. (I don't think it does, but you know how you second guess yourself sometimes). My husband thinks it's awesome, and I normally trust his judgment when I question mine, but it's nice to get the thumbs up from other women!

Gaylene, thanks for the suggestion about the sandals. I'll try that. I can't take them back and anyway I don't want to, because I really want them to work! It's so hard to find beautiful, stylish sandals with a low wedge heel. Good-looking sandals always seem to be either really high, or dead flat. These ones are sleek and sophisticated, and make knee-length skirts work! Because I don't always feel like wearing short skirts, you know? And I've got to make the most of skirt-wearing in the summer, because I never feel like it in the winter. (Anyone else have trouble with knee-length skirts and flat shoes? On me, the proportions are all off).

We used to go to Celtic festivals because our son played pipes in a band. So I've seen lots of guys wearing utilikilts. Usually they're big burly guys with bushy beards. I look forward to seeing a WYW with your kilt.

Yes, I've seen utilikilts -- the gardener across the street was wearing one and I was quite entranced. I think it will be great on you, goes with your style (and your boots) and will be practical for art school. Win, win!

Just went to that brands website and omg I am in love with nearly all of their shoes. Thanks for introducing me.

abc, I can attest that their shoes are excellent quality. I've tried on quite a few, and chose a streamlined pair of short boots with a 2" block heel last year. They are among the most comfortable shoes I've ever had, and go with everything.

I'll let you know if the sandals work out, but I'm sure they will.

Brooklyn, you could check out the Utilikilts website. I know they ship because my husband had mine shipped. You might want to phone and talk to an actual person, though, because they are menswear and so sizing might be tricky (depending on how hourglassy you are).

Angie, I will model them when it's less stinking hot! The kilt does not go AT ALL with the sandals, of course. I will model them separately.

Windchime, the kilt comes to my knees, but they come in longer lengths. They are made for men, who are generally taller.

JAileen, lol I'm definitely not a big hairy guy. My kilt works best with thick-soled, mid-calf steampunk boots. Anything daintier is all wrong.

Lol @Angie -- I'm coping! But I haven't worn anything besides a loose linen tank top and shorts for two months! Bought a ridiculous straw cowboy hat at the Calgary stampede but it actually helps. Wearing it to the pool or beach in Vancouver makes me look like I need my head examined, but I don't care.

And I do appreciate the beautiful warm summer evenings.

I work in retail and we carry a line called 5.11 tactical gear. (Sells very well) I was looking at their site to see if they had women's things and saw kilts like these. ( for men ) at first I thought, "huh?" But then, what a good idea! Love yours!
