Birthday gift for a 1-year old

One of my good friends is throwing a birthday gathering on Saturday for her little boy who is turning one. Although no gifts are required, I feel I must take something. Anyone have any suggestions rather than buying clothes?

I think a favorite story time book or book in general makes a nice gift. DDs still have Shel Silverstein books on their shelves--many of those were gifts from when they were young.

My mom (early childhood specialist) recommends a popper toy (link to Amazon) for a first birthday. It was a hit with my nephew. You can get one just about anywhere that sells toys.

Well, depends on the child.

Books are always great, especially touch and feel ones at this age. Counting, ABCs, colors, etc. Blocks are fun, so are sorters.

Something that we always liked were donations to her college fund. A lot of people in my family do that (although not DHs) if they have no idea what else to get a child.

Two of my favorite books that I received as gifts were The Going to Bed Book (Sandra Boynton) and Pat the Cat (Edith Kunhardt). My kids enjoyed these books for years and I have since given then to many new parents.

Note:The Going to Bed Book saved me many night time struggles. I would say "well, you have to brush your teeth and go to bed just like the animals do" and we would read the book and it somehow eased the way to bed. If you give a book, it is nice to sign and date it. Years later it is fun to see who gave the book.

I have to second Sandra Boynton! Barnyard Dance is still a favorite and my kids are 3 and 5. lol. We also loved the Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle at that age.

Sorry to be a spanner but if the invite requests 'no gifts', I would stick with books and avoid large toys. I like Goodnight Gorilla, Going on a bear hunt, Everywhere babies. Wine sounds lovely too

Books are always a good idea. Since this is there first child, I have a feeling they might not have a lot of books. I guess I'll have to do some shopping tonight.

I know I'm too late but books are never a bad choice. At 1 it could be board book or anything parents enjoy reading to child. It's Dr. Suess week so most are $5 or under (Target, Safeway, etc..) and we have all of them and have been reading them (now the kids read them to me) for years.
