Slouchy trousers

So I'm really liking the look of billowy pants these days! Like slouchy ankle pants or even harem pants. But I'm wondering if it is something that I can wear? What are the "rules" for pulling off a look like this? I am hourglass/pear size 16

No rules for pulling it off. I think the look is fun, but I find it impractical. Not really work appropriate for me, and too much work for my casual weekends with two small kids

I think you would also have to lighten the fabrication for summer. I think you would be well served ordering a pair from somewhere you can return easily, OR better yet, if you have access to a brick and mortar store.

How tall are you? Or do you have long enough legs/can you wear high heels)? IMHO it's crucial for the look. Can't wait ideeas from others:-).

A very fun look, and I think you should definitely give it a try, BA. I'd go with a small heel if you can wear that, but flats could work too. And "Summerizing" the look with more lightweight fabrics, as Thistle suggested, is a good idea, of course.

Two styling ideas (but there are plenty more):

- Semi-tucking a fluid fit tee, blouse, shirt or jumper. (if the temps allow it, you could also add a jacket or blazer).
- Pair the trousers with a cropped sweater (fluid fit, loose, or boxy) layered over a longer length fitted tank or tee. See Adrienne's culottes look, for example:

Thistle, I think it makes a great slouchy weekend wear as well as good for my work (I'm a musician so I don't have to wear anything that resembles office clothes). I only wish I would see some at a brick and mortar store then I'd know for sure by trying them on!

lyn67 I'm only 5'3" which makes shopping a pain as many things are made for tall skinny models, not short frumpy girls with big boobs like me lol. I do have great heels I can wear but also lots of gladiator sandals for summer.

Do it. I am a petite and I wear harem and slouchy pants and oversized tops:) I think what is important is that the items are a good fit.

I have a couple of pairs of slouchy or harem trousers.

I think there are a couple of things that help, I prefer some foot and skin showing ie with sandals or at least bare ankles, and ideally a lower neckline...

I do sometimes wear mine with heels or boots..I don't like them particularly with flat sneakers on me but I do like them with flat sandals.

I sometimes think that if you love the outfit, wear it with a big smile, brushed hair and great lipstick you will look wonderful whether it is conventionally flattering or not.

Thank you all, some very good suggestions. There's only one way to find out if this looks good on me and that's by trying it out. I just wanted to know if there are some hard and fast rules of who cannot pull off a look like this.

Not yet! I'm still working on it! I just bought a pair of slouchy-ish pants that are only slouchy at the ankle. It's a start!

These (below) aren't really harem-ish at all, but I tried them on the other day and found them surprisingly wearable. Obviously they look different on a size 16 than a typical model size. I find that it's key to get the lengths correct, and the right shoes.

I like them Laura, they look great on the model - she's tall and well proportioned. I'm finding that slouchy baggy bottoms are tough for me to pull off. I have to wear shaping garments underneath in order to flatter my thighs.

I tried on some at Old Navy a few months ago but I had fit issues. I have disproprotionately large calves so the whole loosey up top and tight on the ankle didn't work for me. THey just stuck to my calves and felt bad. Sizing up would have given me way too much volume around the waist and thighs. Please keep us posted as I am interested in this style ot change silhouettes but am finding it to be a challenge.
