What to pack, what to wear??!! Early next month we visit the New York area and L.A. to tour colleges and universities with my son. The aim is to narrow the field in terms of where he will apply to study in the United States. We live on the West Coast in Canada and he will apply to a school here but in his chosen field the U.S. schools are considered superior. Our trip will be about a week.

What has me in a bit of a tizzy is the challenge of packing for the diverse weather and also being at a bit of a loss as to what the dress code, if any is for visiting these institutions. I have a nice Spring selection hung up on my rolling rack in shades of navy, light grey, blue, white with a bit of black. I am concerned it is way to light for New York but it will layer nicely. For example I have a very light trench in navy and a sleeveless vest in pale grey cashmere that can be worn together for some warmth but maybe I need a warm coat? My style is "dramatic classic" in the Kibbe system and a friend once described my wardrobe as "classic, sophisticated with a bit of an edge", that is to say "modern classic".

Any suggestions, particularly for "flop proof " outfits for touring schools?
