BF jeans - rolling vs cuffing

This is probably a very lame question but here goes...we talk about "rolling" the hems of our jeans for the BF look. Is that the same as cuffing them, or is rolling done differently?

I think of a cuff as one fold over with the original hem then facing upwards and a roll as two or more where to orginal stitching is then hidden by the interior of the fabric but I am not sure why I think this.

A cuff to me is one turn under, so the original hem is visible. Rolling is any point after that when the original hem is not visible.

I think they can mean the same thing, but I often associate them differently. I think of pic #1 as cuffed, pic #2 as rolled.

I actually think they are different things. One is neater (cuffing by folding over and flattening the cuff with each roll so there are no wrinkles, etc.) Rolling is messier (and takes more work for me to achieve no less! LOL) and is just what it sounds like. I *roll* the hem up a few turns and hope for wrinkles and a messy look.

I prefer the roll as it looks more current to me, but I'm from a generation of cuffs and pegs so that seems dated to me. (Unless it's only cuffed up *once* that seems current to me.) Poison eye on my part I think!

I'm with Sara A, but seems there are lots of interpretations. To me a Cuff is a flat fold (can be over or under) like the left and middle here. A roll is just that rolled hems (always over) like the right one

I also interpret them the way Karie does. Now I'm not sure what it is that I do with my jeans though - it's something in between the two. What I generally do is a big cuff (twice as wide as I want) and then I roll that big cuff up either once or twice. Like in the photo - so maybe a neat roll or a messy cuff?

I always thought of a cuff as more deliberate and crisp than a roll. More like a fold vs a roll. If that makes any sense.

Great visuals Karie - that's kind of how I interpret it too. I have been doing the cuff (or fold) version and haven't attempted the roll yet. I do prefer the look of the roll but am not really sure how to a) get it to look right and b) get it to stay that way.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one who wondered about this

I interpret as Sarah does... and prefer the cuff to be honest. I think of the roll as for school girls.

For me a cuff is the hem turned over *just* once, as Sarah describes. Cuffing makes me think of James Dean. I like both!

I think of cuffing and rolling the way Kari describes - and I actually prefer rolling for my own style, but I can appreciate a nice, crisp cuff too! For those of you wondering about how to roll and get that kind of messy or RATE look - what I do, is just take one side of the hem of my jeans (for example the back) and roll it - but I don't bother to do anything to the front or sides - what happens then is that the front and sides are automatically pulled up and kind of go into a roll - but they don't go into a complete roll - its more just kind of like they've been "pulled" up by the other side which has been rolled. I will also do each leg differently - so, I might roll up the back of one leg - and then roll up the outer side of the other leg - that way the legs don't have that matchy-matchy-I-tried-really-hard- to- make-these-look-like-I-didn't-try-look. Does that make sense?
