Exactly! "Buying better quality" does not mean buying the wrong things for your lifestyle. It means being more selective about good fit, good fabric, colors you love, styles that look good on you, but still in the type of clothing for the occasion.
I also like to think of a goal of having less $$ in my closet and more on my body. Meaning, not tons of things so that I can only wear once a month and meanwhile they hang there waiting. This makes updating, trying new things from time to time, and reacting to lifestyle or body changes more affordable by not having over-invested in so many of the same types of items at once. This approach has been harder for me to learn, but I'm getting there.
