Early In the year women attending the Golden Globes acknowledged 'Times Up' by wearing black. Glamour and Teen Vogue magazines announced the end of their print editions. We lost a fashion icon. There was fantasy in May and October with a couple of Royal weddings. Scandal from designers behaving badly. Some retailers expanding, while others contracted or shutter completely.

What fashion related stories surprised, delighted, or disappointed you you the most in 2018?

Runcarla, this is a great thread. I had to think hard because I wanted to pick one and only one best news item, and Condé Nast/ Vogue agreement to hire only models over 18 is my favorite. Youth modeling of adult clothing raises all sorts of issues, and as a professional who works with Children and Adolescents I must applaud anything that advocates for their protection over exploitation, even if the attempt is imperfect. Every effort counts.

Oh, I would have to look up exact articles, but the expansion of size ranges and use of different size models really came through in 2018.

Rather like Shevia, it is the more universal nature of fashion that is super - kind of wider size ranges, less prescriptive approaches, make up being more acceptable for men to wear, just everything spreading so the norm is increasingly acceptance.

I agree with Jane and Shevia but The fashion moments I remember without any prompting from the year are the royal wedding and the Met ball.Maybe because they got a lot of press coverage.lnteresting thread.Maybe other people’s recollections will prompt some good fashion memories.

These are all great! Similar to what Jane and Shevia have said the increased acceptance of makeup for men is one of fashion's best moves. There are personal reasons for this that relate to my work background. I am also in favour of fashion becoming less prescriptive and more universal. This is one of the reasons I love YLF.

I agree with everyone here. However, I most agree with the wide use of make up nowadays. Not only for women but also for men. I think it's a great tool to prevent sexism and to spread awareness about equality as well.

i think the thing that disappointed me the most was how deep the #metoo movement cut into the fashion/magagine/retail world...
the number of famous photographers implicated and the editiors who seemed to be "surprise"

For me it was watching McQueen (2018) a documentary on my favourite designer - Alexander McQueen. Such a wonderful celebration of an amazing spirit and also tragic in his eventual suicide. Understanding the man helped appreciate his art even more.

Great thread! This is a bit of a micro-story, but to me it was really impactful, and that was just last week, the 'dark nail polish' scandal of 2018: https://www.elle.com/culture/c.....polish-pro

Seems so silly, but I grew up with a cultural influence where not adhering (or being able to adhere) to the British norms of 'good taste' vs. 'vulgarity' was thought to say something of a person's inherent value (my mom still esteems herself less than she should, on the basis on how authority figures esteemed her and her family as a child). I think anything that pokes at these sort of petty snobberies is a very good thing. [I hope this isn't offensive to anyone - I love England; my dad is English - just some assumptions are worth shaking up )

I'm with Jane, Jaime, and kkards. The most exciting fashion moment in 2018 is the expansion of extended sizes and using a more diverse sample of models. FINALLY.

Second, the #Me Too solidarity fashion statement at the Golden Globes when most women wore black. Sends shivers down my spine.

LOVE Michelle Obama becoming even more of a fashion and style icon. (I think she walks on water). I can't think of a more incredible and accomplished person for becoming just that.

I was very interested this past year to see the expansion or stretching of male red carpet fashion, with amazing outfits from Adam Rippon and Ezra Miller, and the incorporation of drag style on the red carpet. Even though I find Jaden Smith annoying, his clothes always interest me. Male celebrities, in the words of the immortal TLo, " is either a businessman’s suit or a guy in a Home Depot parking lot", so it is a pleasure to see the guys in velvet and brocade and leather. Contributing to this welcome display was the concerted effort of the Black Panther cast to DELIVER a mix of couture and culture on every red carpet outing.

I was of course very saddened by Kate Spade's death, but also by the loss of Glamour, which was so smart and timely - and shiny and pretty too!

Okay, I can't think of one in particular but I do want to mention this movie I saw the other night. "I Am Not An Easy Man" about a chauvinist who wakes up in a world dominated by women. Funny, a little dark and worth reading (international film).

A single article or movement doesn't come to mind, but I do read a lot , A LOT, about the business of fashion and especially what goes on at retail and in the big European fashion houses. I too was disappointed, although I shouldn't have been shocked , by responses to the #Metoo movement but women like Donna Karan (to name one that really bothered me). The direction that chain retail is taking is interesting to me; as is the drop in stock value and market relevance of Victoria's Secret...now thankfully such an outdated concept.

Oh, I just saw fashintern’s link that is the same story I posted in another thread. Yes, that kind of thing and the prevalence of #metoo incidents in the fashion industry are definitely my big disappointments.

With everyone on being happy that the fashion and style worlds are slowly becoming more inclusive. And yay for Michelle Obama!

Janet, I’m off to look for the other thread. Sorry to repeat post. These kinds of representations and stupidity like the “coolest monkey in the jungle” kids shirts H&M had a black child model are awful. The other part of representation that I hope will change (& I should probably go look for an article, but think of Iman’s early gigs) are when black and Asian models are used as exotics to create a kind of mystique for white consumers, and/or black men are added to make something look “edgy”.
