My "quick and smoky" technique is to take a dark shadow (on me, my fave smoky color is a dark purple), Put it on as if you're doing eyeliner, a fat stroke that's heavy at the base of your lid where you would line, and a little more at the outer corner. Then, blend it all upwards with a fluffy eye brush.
Blend the outer corner towards the middle of the eye (fluffy brush makes it real quick). You could also use your finger and smudge up and smudge in. Then use a dark liner to make a medium weight line. Extra mascara hides the mistakes :).
It's like smoky-light. It's not the 3 or 4 color professional technique, but that's overwhelming as a beginner.
