Best belt shape for apple-y types?

Is there any particular shape of belt that is best for an apple type?

I have this close-fitting knit dress with a big cowl neck that really needs a belt. It came with a wide pleather sash thing but it doesn't really look very good on. It could be re-fashioned but I'm not sure what shape would be best. I rather like the looks of those obi belts but they tend to fold up or shift around in the back and don't look so great on.

I have apple tendencies and like medium to wider widths, but your height may also be a factor. I like low contrast to the rest of the outfit and tend to wear the belt a bit high. I also love extra long narrowish belts that I loop back over to shorten so that the loose end makes a diagonal line to break up the "apple" section.

I've found that my ideal belt width is 1 - 1 1/2 inches. Like Joy, I like to keep my belts low contrast to the top that I'm wearing.

The whole belt shifting thing is hard to avoid especially when you have a lot of sitting then standing up I do find that my stretch belt and braided belts have lower amounts of shifting.

It would also depend on whether you are short-waisted or not. You want a belt wide enough to define and nestle without digging into belly bits. For my short-waisted apple self, I find a 1/2 belt works best.

I only wear dark belts because light colored ones are not flattering for my midsection. The only exception is a gold chain belt that I wear slung low. Here is how I resolved the sweater dress issue:

Ah, thanks for all the links and ideas! I had missed a few of those.

I don't actually know if I am short-waisted or not. How do you tell? I know the answer is probably "post a photo"...

I did this test and THOUGHT I could put two hands' width but just did it again and discovered that no, I can only put one and a bit hands' width, and my hands are little. So I'm short waisted (by a small amount) and always thought the opposite!
