I started running cross country and track in Jr. High, and just loved it, even though I had been told I wasn't built right to be a 'good' runner. There was always a time between the end of cross country (early November) and the start of track (May) When nothing happened, and there was no team training.
It was '77 at the height of the first running boom, and Runner's World magazine was all about the marathon. I found a book called 'How to Run the Perfect Marathon'. It was essentially a week by week training guide. I followed the plan for 6 months, and in April '78 at 17 years of age, ran a marathon.
This was a formative event in my life. I learned that I could do ANYTHING I set my mind to.
