Batwing for me?

When I was searching for a jacket yesterday I tried on a batwing knit sweater in a knit that I loved the look of, it was black, navy and silver mottled and so comfortable. I thought it looked great and I need some more fall or winter tops, but I didn't buy it because it was fairly expensive (60€) and I feared I would destroy the delicate knit too fast.

What I wanted to ask is if all of you wear batwing tops, no matter the body type? I really liked the casual and relaxed vibe, but the undefined shoulder and surrendered waist is not my best look. Or does it all depend on the garment?

Well, I have an apple belly, generous bust and sloping shoulders --- and I wear them. May not be my *most flattering* silhouette, but they're comfy and fun... and no one's run away screaming yet! I find a more fitted waistline helps --- mine has a broad band at the bottom all the way from waist to hip that reins in the volume pretty sharply.

I think you and I are somewhat the same shape. I've never found batwings or dolmans to be particularly good for my shape unless they are kind of sheer or drapey so you can see the body shape underneath (with a cami or something of course). My problem with them is, like you said, that they emphasize my sloping shoulders and hide my waist. I can do waist surrendering but not when it is combined with the rounded shoulder shape - with both it looks kind of sloppy. In addition, a lot of dolmans seem to come with banded waists, which are horrid on me because I am so short waisted with a sharp flare right below my waist so they never sit at the right point.

So I guess my short answer is: no, I don't wear them UNLESS they are sheer, drapey, and don't have a banded waist. I think I own one that fits these rules but it's completely sheer and I think it's actually a bathing suit coverup.

Ah, Diana makes a good point. I think mine are sheer or see-through mesh/knits too. So yes, you can tell the body inside is not batwinged... which doubtless helps!

Thanks Manidipa and Diana. That makes sense. It wasn't sheer, so you couldn't see me underneath, but it was without a banded waist so that was a good thing - these tops with a band almost never work on me either. I think I'll keep my eyes peeled for a sheer one.

Hi Astrid I'd just like to reinforce what Diana said. I'm pear shaped (and I think you are also) and batwings can be our friend so long as they are quite shear and as Diana says our body shape is visible.
