I HATE buying a bathing suit. I have ordered no fewer than 10 and all have gone back! If they offer support for the "girls" they are too short (I was trying tankinins as I am a different size on bottom than top). Or they offer no support and at a 36FF that is just not attractive or comfortable. Or the bottoms don't fit and the color is such that I can't substitute another brand.

Nordstrom's is so totally cutting me off

We are supposed to go to the lake with his family over the holiday weekend and I am out of time. I think I am just going to WalMart and buying one that covers. No support, will look awful, but I just can't muster up the will to care.

Thanks for listening DH hears my words but doesn't understand. He walked into the store and bought the first pair of swim trunks that caught his eye. And yeah, they fit just fine.

Buying swimsuits is never fun. Ever. My sympathies.

Angie may have suggestions for your support and fit needs, though. Hope so!

Have you tried the smallest sizes in plus sizing? I think plus brands just "get" the need for more support and they have come a long way.
Swimsuit buying is a mare for everyone!
Try Lane Bryant and Torrid. ETA: Mango's plus size is not yet launched. It will be in 2014. Also check Macys.

I am not much help. Can a sports bra you use for walking dry quick enough and provide extra (hidden?) support under a cheaper suit?

I hear you, Thistle. I have little difficulty finding good exercise gear, including my riding shorts (ooh spandex), but good swimsuits are so elusive. Swimming with extended family is even trickier! My in-laws have a pool --- and they're tiny people who, while quite wonderful in other ways, are rather proud of their small size.

I like to wear a cute knit target dress as a cover up. And I buy really nice flip flops, too. I've found some luck at Lands End, although I have to size up at least 2 sizes, because their suits are thicker and rather shape-wear like. Do you have a Sears near you?

First - ugh. I hate bathing suit shopping too so I feel your pain.

A suggestion: Do you have a Lands End nearby? Their suits are awesome quality and they have a wide range of sizes, including lots of options for cup sizes. I did a massive order and return session last summer and kept 2 suits. Returns are free to Sears stores with LE inside. Their suits are expensive but often on sale (check their "sale/clearance" section and then buy when they have an extra % off - I got mine for $15 each, originally close to $100).

Don't worry!!! You will find a fab suit!

Have you tried Lands End to Saramirs point - and Bare Necessities? They have better stock than anyone at this time of year when pickings are very slim.

Hi Thistle! I don't like wearing a bathing suit at all and I am a 32C:-(
Do you follow Allie of Wardrobe Oxygen? She did a post on June 26 on this very issue. I would encourage you to read it if you haven't already. She also recommends Lands End. Good luck and let us know how you make out!

I have a Lands End Inlet near me and a Sears. I will try them tonight, and I will size up 2 sizes. Normally LE doesn't "get" me. But perhaps the "wonder" of spandex will help.

I have to size up two sizes in swimwear as well. I got mine from Miracle Suit. Although it was much more than I'd ever spent on a suit before, I love it. I don't have a very large bust, but my friend does and she loves Freya suits. I think you can get that brand at Bare Necessities website. My friends also say they get much better support from bikinis than any other kind of suit because the bikini top is designed more like a bra and they can buy a suit by their bra size that way. I'm not sure if you feel comfortable in one, but it might be one solution.

Thistle, this won't help for the holiday weekend, but check out H2O wear. They are suits made for aquatic exercise classes. They come in a wide range of sizes, and I can vouch for their quality. Some of the suits are pretty cute, too!

I think swimsuit sizes run differently than other clothing. I found I wear a size 8 swim suit when I wear a 2 or 4 in other things. Can you find a suit that comes in bra sizes?

I feel your pain, Thistle. I hate swimsuit shopping and usually put it off, ending up with a suit I only put on if I *have* to. This year I started in March and ended up with a suit I actually love. You might not find the "one" before this weekend, but it's definitely something to put on your long-range shopping list so you're not caught unprepared in the future. Good luck on your quest!!

There was one time I got lucky. I went to an event with a swimming pool, and found that I hadn't bothered to pack a swimsuit. I went to the nearest Target, and after admiring and trying on any number of print suits, ended up with a two piece solid black suit that has been my go-to suit for years now. The top was a tankini, and the bottom was skirted. Both pieces were ruched on the sides, with drawstrings that could be cinched up to show off more skin, or completely uncinched to cover up. Best of both worlds. And it looked just a bit retro, which I like. And, since the two pieces are solid black, I can mix them with other swim pieces in different colors or prints if I want.

So don't despair. You only have to find *one* good suit. Or, two separate pieces, possibly.

Can't think of anything I dislike more than shopping for swimsuits. Stay with it!
