Bangladesh Factory Safety Accord

I love clothes and have been so inspired by this website that I can actually whip up new outfits from my closet. Am not shopping as mindlessly as I'd been doing before! But its been very disappointing to learn about the Bangladeshi factory incident and even worse the fact that so many major retailers are refusing to sign the Bangladeshi Factory safety accord. The reasons they give about alternate plans are not very convincing. As people who find expression in clothes, what can we do? If we derive so much of our identity from our clothes, doesn't it make it doubly important for us to stanp up for better working conditions? I was reading a few of these articles and feel very responsible for what is happening. H&M has signed the accord, Nordstrom, Gap, JCPenney and many others haven't. Signing a petition and temporarily refusing to support those businesses are positive actions towards justice.

Thanks for the Change.org petition, Wellingtongirl. I know the issues are complicated, but I'm embarrassed that the European retailers are on board for better working conditions, and the U.S. retailers mainly are not. As an aside, lately I've felt I've had a lot more clout as an individual with Change.org petitions on issues that I care about, than voting or other avenues available for U.S. citizens. And they're good about sending followup feedback on the issues.

Very timely. We all know that wages are less in the Third world, but there is no need whatsoever for workers to suffer with dangerous working conditions just so we can buy a cheap tee shirt.

Thank you so much for this !!! I heard that many companies have agree to sign the accord or have already, but now we need to make sure that they actually do it.

Awesome! It really takes less than a minute to sign a petition and the change it brings is unbelievable... H&M had to finally sign in bcoz of such petitions. We really can bring change.. Cheers Ladies!
