Bad season for cool color lovers

I know that those of you who look great in red, pink, yellow, and earth tones have great reason to celebrate this season, but I’ve taken a look around for some spring/summer color in casual yet interesting styles to add to my predominantly neutral wardrobe, and I’m coming up pretty sparse. Anybody with me having any better luck? If not, I’ll be saving some money this year and wearing the heck out of the stuff I have.

I've been adding a lot of my neutrals and stuff like jeans to fill out the warmer weather essentials portion of my wardrobe. I also like red and bright stripes, so there's that for me right now. The other colors on offer aren't speaking to me as much.

I'm also focused on a search for sandals, and mostly looking at neutrals since I need workhorses.

Wasn't this supposed to be a turquoise year?

There’s a heck of a lot of earth tones... but I have noticed berry colours quite a bit and lilac is still holding strong here too. But wow there’s a lot of leopard print.

I don’t think there is such a thing as a cool yellow, The Cat? Pink, eh. Every time I try it, it becomes an orphan, unless it is in a print with other beloved colors. Red I love in theory, and I don’t look awful in it, but again, every time I buy a red item, it goes unworn. Lilac makes me look ill. Ditto to tans and beiges. I do see some olive around, and I like it, but it’s not my best green. I love greens, but somehow the ones I’m seeing this season (again, warm yellow greens or preppy Kelly green) are not speaking to me.

Christina, I thought we would get some turquoise too! So far, I see nothing of note.

Mustard seems like it's going to be the color of the season.

I'm looking for cool tones, too, and not finding them.

As far as I know, there are cool versions of most colours, except orange. My cool version of yellow is lemon.

Janet! For shame! I seem to remember a particularly FABULOUS red ball gown....

I'm seeing what Angie's seeing - lilac, all kinds of greens from olive to forest and lime sorbet, and pale blues. Pink everywhere. Many online shopping sites will let you screen by colour.

Carla, LOL — I seem to be ok with red for occasion wear, don’t I? But honestly, I bought that gown over a decade ago.

Color is so interesting. I feel too conspicuous in too much or too bright color. But the colors I’m seeing out now are too warm or not saturated enough — those lilacs and pinks and faded blues...

When I am filtering by color, I’m not seeing much to get excited about. I suspect this is just a time when I can coast on what I already have, and enjoy my closet as it is, with just a couple of refreshers here and there.

I would look at independent designers who don't follow the same colour palette as mainstream fashion retailers....

Maybe it is the season to splash out and get one sensational top (or dress) if not much is appealing?

It is also still early in the season so I imagine there will be new additions April and May.

Lisa, those are great finds for you! You look so good in that lilac color — I’ll keep an eye out for your jacket.

A&O has some really cute things. I like a lot of those prints! Most of what’s on that site honestly doesn’t fit my current budget or my casual lifestyle (or honestly my body, sigh). But it’s nice to see that they have jeans that look a lot like the flares I got an Anthro last year.

I sound like a crank, LOL. I’m feeling very picky these days! I find myself craving something a bit new but not finding it. But I will take that as a sign that really I have enough, refresh some basics and some shoes, and enjoy what I have.

But yep-so many pale washed out colors I say this every year around this time though, and things perk up later. In theory I should be happy with the mustards and other warm colors-but the colors are so flat and matte. Sigh...

Those are pretty, Angie! Thank you. Not really summer wear for me, sadly (long sleeves and dry clean). The teal is tempting, nonetheless, but $375 for a "dry clean only" that isn't even silk is a little frustrating.

ETA: I found a sleeveless version, but dang, it's still expensive for something I will sweat in.

I am going nuts with all my FAVES at retail! For my whole adult life it has been impossible to find rusty browns and cinnamons- my best colors. And now, everywhere! I love it. But I feel your pain- it is frustrating how shopping can be feast or famine.

Carla, I agree with you about pink. I want it to be a little surprise color that pops out in my wardrobe every now and again, but this season it is everywhere, mostly in shades I don’t like.

Janet, I’m surprised preppy Kelly green doesn’t work for you. I like Sal’s advice of going off road a bit. Do you know of makers in your area?

Janet, I can’t wait until a deep blue / purple colour comes back. I’ve a very firm favourite scarf in the colour. It was ‘in’ in 2015 and I can’t wait until it comes back again.

I agree that cool toned saturated colours are much harder to come by at the moment. Hopefully as summer comes more colour choices will emerge at retail.

You look gorgeous in black which luckily is always in style. I am so glad that you bought that fabulous blue skirt, maybe the strategy this season is to buy fewer pieces but spend a bit more on those chosen few - that way you can get those gorgeous A&O shoes which look like they would seamlessly fit into your wardrobe and be super comfortable.

I think it's always hard to find saturated tones in S/S, especially cool ones. The blues and purples tend to be very washed out or faded. I am seeing a lot of fuchsia/magenta/deep pinks.

Jane, I love that periwinkle color too, and it did not really show up much here a couple of years ago. I have almost nothing in that color even though I adore it. I have a Milly sweater in that color with detachable black leather cuffs and collar that I baby because i don’t want to ruin it — and it’s ever so slightly snug because I bought it when I was a size smaller. More dark periwinkle, please!

Jessikams, I do like a touch of rust and cinnamon in my wardrobe so I do like those colors. I’m happy to see them, as well as some chocolate brown. But frankly, beiges and washed out pale colors leave me cold, as do ultra-bright warm colors (I know citron is super popular on YLF and I have never been tempted in the least). Saturated jewel tones and neutrals have always been my thing.

That top is pretty Janet, but the fabric is really sheer and would require a cami or nude bra (see back pic- the black pants grin through). For the $$$ they could at least have opaque fabric!
