Bad idea to purge out of season?

I was pulling my striped maxi dress out to offer up to a cute, willowy young hostess I work with and got to thinking. I know I am okay parting with it, since I only wore it when actually on the beach in FL, 3 times, and cannot envision any way I would wear it in Tahoe summer. Besides it is a bit big and long on me. But then I got to wondering if in general it's a bad idea to purge summer items when the temps outside are below freezing. Are we too far away mentally from wearing those things to have good judgement about tossing them?

I find the opposite sometimes, I find the distance from the item lets me objectively assess if I really like it or not.

I just did a massive purge in the midst of a fairly cold winter and I have no regrets. I'm pretty ruthless with my clothes, just need to get that way with shoes now. Sometimes you just know when something is past its usefulness. I wouldn't purge anything that hasn't been through at least one weather appropriate season though.

I find it's best to purge right after the season you're purging. So I purge summer stuff in the fall when I'm packing it all away. I have a good idea then of what I wore and what I didn't.

Sara, that's interesting, as I tend to purge before a move (again, packing) but I don't switch out closets, so I never pack away seasons.

I made myself wait until the end of summer to do a major purge of summer clothes (it was my *punishment* for buying way too much stuff). I don't think I'd force myself to wait again, but do it when the mood strikes.

After looking at a bunch of my pictures from last summer, I just did another purge, but I put the offending items in hidden storage. I'll take them to the consignment store/Goodwill when it warms up. Since you're not a serial purger, I wouldn't worry about letting your maxi dress go. You'll still have plenty off warm weather options.

I tried purging my winter clothes at the end of winter but didn't have the heart for it - but I think that is because I wanted to explore new directions & I wasn't sure where I would be going.

If I wasn't in flux style-wise I would purge at least at the beginning & end of a season. I also purge things I don't wear as I try them & realise I'd rather wear something else.

I am a terrrrrible purger. I have an entire double closet full of clothes and 2 dressers.

At least if you purge it now, it will be awhile before you miss it and by then you may think" "Oh well!" or have something new and fresh to replace it!

I vote purge away! But I always support getting rid of stuff, as a general principle.

One caveat - if you're purging summer clothes in winter, it's easy to get rid of so much blah but useful stuff that when it suddenly becomes 80 degrees in March, you have nothing to wear and are doing laundry twice a week.

Mo - I live in an older house without much closet space so I don't have room for all my clothes at one time. I don't think I have a huge amount of clothes either, it's just a small closet which I share with my husband. One nice thing about seeing only one season at a time is that all the out-of-season clothes seem fresh and new when I unpack them again.

Good question! I find if I purge out of season I usually have a few items I regret getting rid of.

I'm a reluctant purger so purging after season (keeping in mind what I did not wear) is easiest since I'm not likely to need it in the near term.

I tend to purge at the beginning of the season. That way I can try on comfortably (i.e. not trying on winter clothes in the summer heat) and assess the fit and my current style goals etc.

I purge...whenever. Always at end and beginning of season, but if I want to give something away mid-season I'll do it. If you think this friend would enjoy the dress and look good in it and you need to make room for something more suitable for your new summer climate, I say wave goodbye!

I think it's a good idea to assess your clothes right before the season starts, and then right afterwards. But you've got a good instincts about this particular dress, so I'd say go ahead and pass it on.
