Howdy

I've been in hermit mode/low ego or workerbee.
Anyways my friend, who I was the maid of honor in her wedding. She's having a baby. It'll be a girl. I agreed to cohost baby shower, because I felt guilty she never got a bridal shower or bachelorette party.
Anyways I'm in charge of all savory food, for 14 something including kids.
Need suggestions.
Also a present. I know Sophie the Giraffe is big hit. Generic ideas are great as I won't have time to get something off her Amazon list. I also know not to go overboard on cute clothes. There's a Hanna Anderson near me & I know their stuff is good. A bunch of onsies?
And yes I suck. But I'm trying not fail spectacularly.
Any and all suggestions appreciated

I usually knit something. My second choice would be some books. It's never too early to start reading to them.

Food:
Deviled eggs
Hummus and veggies
Take and bake pizza
Fruit salad
Chop veggie salad

ETA: Baked brie and crackers

Is it a buffet style thing? I would go to Whole Foods and get it catered. Also: handpies

Gift: I'd go to the fancy people toy store. You know the sort, where everything is made of wood and educational and distinctly NOT princess pink.

My favorite gifts are books. Check out the book Pinkalicious. Adorable pictures, and a good gift for those having a girl (and rachy, I'm not a big pink lover, but love the expressions in the book)

Kids of all ages love pizza. I'd do a cheese pizza as one possibility. Also Mac and cheese, a fruit plate maybe with a dip. Kids love dips.
As for gifts, go for sizes to grow into in clothing. I was especially appreciative of 12 month and 24 month. A good set of wooden blocks is a great gift for boy or girl. A set of simple board books all with a bedtime theme. They will be loved.

Joy, bigger clothes are a good one. Moms tend to get drowned in adorable newborn-3 month stuff, but 9+ month and on can be more useful later on. I like giving books as well (board books are good, and my nieces like the "fabric" paper books that stand up to being chewed on), and occasionally a blankie. Me and two of my brothers were blankie kids. If she's got a registry, some of the items may be available at Babies 'R' Us or Buy Buy Baby. That's always faster.

For food, the usual savories I see:
mini quiches
tortilla pinwheels
warm artichoke dip with tortilla chips (there's a good Chile's copycat recipe out there)
cocktail sausages

Nothing terribly exciting, but all pretty good stuff IMHO.

I was given Good Dog Carl at my own baby shower. It made me laugh so hard I cried. I Am A Bunny was one of my son's favorite books. Dr Seuss is great, and anything by Richard Scarry.

May I suggest getting a caterer to do the food. If not, head over to Trader Joes and get hot and cold snack food (deep freeze section is fab). Pizza delivery for the kids, as well as crisps and cookies. Getting chicken wing delivery from Wingdom can be a crowd pleaser too.

Seconding Angie's suggestion about TJs for food.

Sophie is a hit, but have you asked your friend what she needs? If she's practical, she may be grateful for a supply of diapers or an Amazon gift card. It's not sentimental, but neither are baby fluids.

I might ask a few friends to pitch in for a gift certificate to a spa, something that gives her what will be some much-needed alone and pamper time.

ETA: Just reread your post, and yeah, if she an Amazon list, a gift card might be the way to go, since she can prioritize what's most important, when. Also, kudos to you for organizing this!

Basic fruit, veggie, and cheese trays are always a hit with kids. Especially if they are picky eaters. Just add a few other things for the adults.

A gift card and books is my fallback gift. The lift the flap cardboard books were a favorite of my girls when they were young. Hanna Anderson has some nice playdresses and leggings.

My sister told me about this book . its calked I'll love you forever. I bought it for her. She gave me the hardcover version for my little one. Its a great read for mom and baby to read.

Also side zip baby pjs or hats. Dont stress about it.as long as it comes from the heart. It's not about The most expensive.

Whole Foods to the rescue. Normally they require 48 hours notice, but I talked to a nice lady who said she could get it done. Yes, way more bonkers expensive than if I planned better & did it myself. But if she had a destination bachelorette party or wedding, I would have probably spent more

I agree with catering if you can find it.
As for the gift I second, third the book choice. You cannot go wrong. However your onesie idea is also fabulous! Do the easiest for your scheduled because both are great.

For the gift, an idea I like is diapers. One of my friends recently had a baby and said she really appreciated receiving diapers at her shower and she had enough to last 6 months! Maybe get some baby soap, shampoo, etc too.

Babies never ever wear out newborn stuff, so if your friend has friends/relatives with little ones, she may be getting hand-me-downs from them.

Maybe if she already doesn't have it, housecleaning service or meal delivery for *X* number of times? I am thinking of something that you could relate to better and probably could evaluate better than baby stuff.

I often give a 'medical' basket, ie thermometer, rubber bulb for clearing nose boogies, Desitan diaper rash cream, rubber spoons for first foods, book on baby's health that type of thing.

Catering and books. My kid learned to read before she was three from me reading her the moomintroll books by tove jansson and the complete works of beatrix potter and the franklin tv show books. It was a lot of reading.

Congrats to your friend!

With each of my three babies, I really appreciated friends dropping off meals or gift cards to nearby places that hubby could pick up food to go. The first few weeks of little sleep and fatigue, especially if breastfeeding, is rough, and food is a MAJOR source of happiness and comfort to a new mom. : )
