September and October are still very hot for me. But to answer, my seasons are going like this: summer, puffy vest; fall, knee-length puffy; winter, ankle-length puffy… LOL!

September is still hot/shorts weather here.

October the longer pants come out, as do light jackets/toppers - the third piece. Less humidity means better hair control, so possibly more straight styling. Also, the Bludstone boots come out, and socks get worn.

The end of October is when DH and I do our annual closet review. This results in a list of items we will be on the lookout for in the coming year. There are usually some winter things, for which we do a shop in November at a ‘fancy’ mall, and a S/S list that we start picking away at in March/April.

It’ll start to cool off by the end of September, I think. And that just means it won’t be blazing hot, just pretty warm in the afternoon. So I’ll still be wearing summery clothes. I’ll wear short sleeves instead of sleeveless tops, cropped pants instead of shorts, and maybe sneakers instead of sandals in the chilly mornings.

Actually I’m wearing a near fall outfit right now - olive and black polka dot short sleeve top, black Bermuda shorts, black Blondo zip sneakers. I have a meeting in an hour and it looks like rain so it’s cooler, plus I don’t want to wear leather sandals if it rains. A couple weeks ago we had torrential rain. I think we got over an inch of rain in less than an hour.

We have Summer temps until October. I pull out army green, clay and brown pieces in summer fabrics to make the transition.

For me, autumn dressing starts when the weather begins to cool off (where I live, this happens usually in the middle of September) and means goodbye to thin summer garments and sandals, and hello to warmer clothes, closed shoes, and boots.

I don't think anyone HAS TO dress in certain colours in a certain season. It is more important that fabrics and styles are appropriate for the season. That said, I will admit that I like to focus on certain colours in each of my four very different seasons. My favourite autumn colours (based on my colouring, style and preferences) are magenta, burgundy, purple, deep turquoise, teal, medium and deep emerald greens, medium grey, charcoal, cool browns and navy. I often like to include one or more of these colours in my autumn outfits.

September tends to be warm in Seattle and since our summers start late (this year we had an especially cool, wet spring, despite the heat now) I like to stretch summer dressing out as long as possible! At least till the autumn equinox, if the weather holds.

That said, I do enjoy shifting my color palette with the seasons. I'm especially keen on rose and teal as a color combo for late summer/early fall. Then in October I'll pull out the burgundies and plums. I agree with The Cat, though, there's no requirement for wearing autumn colors (by whatever definition) in autumn, only if it is fun for you!

Summer tends to last through October here, but as soon as the temperatures are nearer to 80 than 90 I start wearing closed shoes instead of sandals, and start returning to long pants and jeans. The exciting part is closer to November when my jackets can come out again.

I wear my summer things through October, cause it generally stays warm enough. Of course "my" colors are autumn ones- burgundy, rust, olive, chocolate brown, etc- so skirts and sleeveless tops in these colors are easy winners. I dress the same May-October!

When it's below 70, I mix my summer and winter wardrobes. Sleeved blouses with skirts, long sleeved dresses, sleeveless with trousers, short sleeves, heavier long skirts, cropped or thin pants (like linen). Light topper for night or early am. Sandals still if over 60!

Thank you each for your quick responses. I wear closed shoes in summer but add stockings and socks as the weather gets colder. I agree that autumn starts hot and cools off gradually. In this area of Colorado, it cools sooner than I am used to, especially going to mountain festivals. I froze the first Thanksgiving here as it was cold, something I was not used to. Big snows can come early. Boots.
Thanks to those who addressed colors. I will try to wear something fallish with my brights and plan to use browns as much as I can.

Question..do you change your jewelry in fall/winter?

I usually start with a V-neck sweater vest over a crewneck T-shirt with shorts and as it gradually cools down I exchange the shorts for jeans or slacks and upgrade to a skivvy ( turtleneck T-shirt ) instead of the crewneck T-shirt.

Autumn dressing for me is generally a change in colour palette with the addition of a light topper if necessary, generally in the early morning or evenings and the addition of ankle boots. This is a typical Autumn outfit I would wear.

I wear less jewelry in cold weather- usually just earrings. Bracelets don't work with sleeves, necklaces don't work with scarves, and winter outfits are already ALGO. Winter in general is much more complicated than summer (extra clothes, scraping frost off the car, often low tires, less light), so the less "extra" I have to deal with the better!

I do tend to wear darker colors as the season changes. Usually I have to give up my sandals and switch to sneakers and boots around mid-September but sometimes earlier. Heck, last weekend felt like fall already! But back to the 70's-80's this week. I'm not ready for the cooler weather yet!

I am anxious for fall weather to arrive. I do not thrive in heat. Thankfully, our temps have started to come down to more reasonable levels — in the 70s and 80s during the day, and blissfully into the 60s at night, so I can once again sleep with the windows open and no AC!

My color pallets deepens as fall approaches, even if I’m still wearing “summer” clothes. Deeper, richer colors feel right in September even if the days are still warm. I’ll start wearing more black and grey and less white. I’ll start wearing closed shoes more than sandals, and jeans will come back out on days when we start to only hit highs around 70 or so. I’m always eager to change gears, and I’m quite tired of most of my summer wardrobe by the time September rolls around, so I’ll start phasing in those fall items as much as comfort will allow!

So sorry, Suntiger, I’m cheering on the arrival of cooler weather! I’m ready for boots and jackets and jeans!

Joy, you also asked if we change our jewellery in fall/winter.

I look best (and thrive) in cool colours. White pearls and silver jewellery are essentials to me year round. However, I own a few pieces of jewellery in warm colours, and in my opinion they harmonize best with spring and fall, so I always make sure they get some wear in those seasons.

In fall, I like to pull out jewellery in gold and brown. Jewellery made of wood (in any colour) also signals "fall" to me.

When winter arrives, I will instead pull out transparent jewellery (which catches and reflects light) and "bling"/diamond-ish jewellery.

The Cat, your jewelry change makes sense to me. I also pull out leaf motifs, but usually not big tropical leaves. Can I wear an orange sleeved top with cobalt pants or pale baby blue with olive pants in fall or keep it for spring or summer?

I wear the same core colours year round - especially in HK, where we don't really get Autumn & Spring so much as '80%+ humid & wet' for March until October, then '50%+ humid & dry' the rest of the time

That said though, my cold weather items (like coats & boots) usually come out to play after the official Mid Autumn Festival (10th September this year, which is fairly early - so I don't anticipate really needing said items until at least mid-October). But it's fairly fluid, since I still wear toppers in the heavy AC here & my sandals still get *some* use after Oct.

One thing I have noticed this year though (especially after being back in the UK) is that I don't feel drawn to certain bright colours when the weather cools (like chartreuse, coral & yellow gold) but others I still love to wear all year (like marigold & brass) *shrugs*

Fall is my least favorite season, so I stretch summer as long as possible. As you know, Colorado can be warm into October, so I'm rarely looking to push it. I'm planning on Barbiecore for some fall purchases...hoping to find some mid-weight things.

I do wear different jewelry fall/winter...fewer light, "tinkly" pieces (with jewels,) more substantial pieces.

Joy, leaf motifs are beautiful, and if I owned any, I would absolutely wear them in fall.

Re the two colour combos you mentioned: Orange & cobalt sounds stunningly gorgeous. Pale blue & olive sounds pretty, calm and soothing. Both combos will be great for autumn outfits.

The first part of September is lovely in Seattle. Warm and mild. But the days are shorter, so crisp mornings and evenings. You haul out toppers for sure. Especially by the water.

I wear the same colours year round, generally. But wear burgundy and cognac in the Autumn and Winter. A lot more navy too. In the Spring and Summer, I wear a lot more white.

I am suddenly interested in this topic, because of my upcoming fairly complicated trip. When I started planning what to take, back in July, I saw that the temps where I’m going will be the same as they were here then, so I thought I’d take the same capsule I’d been wearing. Now I’m not so sure. I’m getting a little tired of those things, maybe, and school will be in session, so fall-looking clothes might be in order. Arg. More hassle than I want!

SF,I see students here bringing and wearing fall/winter things in mid August. Lots of boots and flannel shirts. They wear boots with shorts and look like they just rolled out of bed and dressed up with the flannel shirt worn as a jacket over a tank. This is girls and boys. Boys usually wear jeans, girls look ready for working out. Girls that are hostesses in restaurants wear their boots with silky slip dresses and maybe a ratty cardigan. You will see a very casual mix. Maybe the East Coast is still more preppy, but I doubt it.

Have a good trip and wear a mask. Almost everyone I know who has travelled lately has come down with a Covid variant, including our young priest who went to Israel. Older people also get pneumonia and are in and out of the hospital with it and Covid. Be careful.

I'm right with Janet - in fact, I've already been making some subtle seasonal changes in home decor, plants on the balcony, hand wash and candle scents, the makeup and nail colours I'm wearing etc. I appreciate summer because our winters can be so miserably long, but I'm ready for cooler temps and a chance to wear some different clothes. I LOVE fall. As far as I'm concerned , the end of August is the end of summer, even though September can be warm and sunny here.

I wear the same colors throughout the year and only change decor for Christmas, once a year.

I will move silks, dresses and linen clothes to my off season closet at the end or mid September, depending on a year. And will take sneakers out of their boxes.

The full switch to the fall dressing will be done in October.

Joy, I’m starting early with the masks. One of the people I’m looking forward to seeing is immunocompromised so wears a mask everywhere. I called the other day & they were working out in the gym—with a mask on. Doesn’t take it off for the actual exercises. So tomorrow, two weeks before that part of the trip, I’m going to start doing the same. Kids start back to school next week, so I hope to get a lane to myself when I swim, because masks don’t work in the water. But everywhere else, my son and I will have them on.

Joy, you are so well organised! I usually swap my UK summer wardrobe to the autumn pieces by mid September, in my case the colour palette does not change, it is just a slight tone change (darker in the cold season, lighter in the spring summer). I've already started looking at which items I don't want to keep for the following year - trying to reduce unnecessary duplications and downsize black pieces in the wardrobe.

As I will be travelling from mid sept to beginning of October, I will try to extend the use of my UK summer wardrobe (with lots of layers). Finger's crossed it works!
