Attn!! Colour Experts. Need Help Coordinating

I seem to be having a major case of styling block. I got this Top Shop dress from The Bay,

and am having some difficulties. As most of you know, my signature style is to wear a short dress with jeans and boots. Without giving it sufficient thought as to what jeans would go with it, I bought the dress. Now, I seem to be stuck.

What cut, colour, style, etc.. of jeans will work with this dress? I am including a picture of the boots I think will work, my Giuseppe Zanottis.

Please bear in mind I prefer to wear my tall boots under my jeans, but if you think skinnies tucked in would be better, then please say so.

Sorry to be sounding like such a style whiner, I just seem to be having a hard time with this one.

PS, my experiment with being a plus size girl is coming to an end. This outfit will be an incentive.

Won't say I'm an expert, but I love purple. Would love to see that with its opposite on the color wheel, a yellow, maybe a pale vanilla. Or grey if you don't do the brown-type neutrals. Or super light acid washed blues. Or black. All but the vanilla would work immediately with the black. Yellow, that might require a black belt or scarf with black or something to pull it together. I've also seen some summery floral jeans in purple and others in a beige or olive. Guess it depends what else you want the jeans to go with.

Ann; I'm liking the idea of black jeans and also the super light blue. Never thought of grey as an option. Would you go light or dark with the grey? I also have a pair of cognac knee high boots I'd like to wear with the dress.
Sticking with the blues, greys, and black for jeans, what are your thoughts?
The jeans don't have to go with anything else. Not a fan of patterned or coloured jeans.

Angie; Yes, this is one of those things that should be straight forward, but I seem to have a block of some kind, and I'm in second guessing mode. Not a good place to be. Simply, I'm having trouble coordinating the purple of the dress with the boots and jeans. I know this is MY look, so please help me to own it with this dress.

I have a similar purple sweater dress that I used to wear over skinny jeans all the time. The jeans were mid-gray, black and medium and dark blue denim washes. The boots were black and grey and any of the boots would be worn with any of the colors of jeans. I think my favorite was skinny black jeans and tall pewter Docs.

How about a pair of black skinnies tucked into the boots? Or straight leg blue jeans worn over the boots. I love faded blue jeans, so that gets my top vote, along with white straight leg jeans. I'm staying away from flares jeans because the frock is flared. Hope that makes sense

I love this shade of purple because it can almost work as a neutral. I think it should work with almost any color except for neons and maybe some warm coral or bright orange tones.

In terms of boots, or any other footwear, I think both cognac and black will work, and so would gray, brown, or most neutrals. As long as the color of the shoes work with the jeans, they should be fine with the dress. If you wear cognac, your face will bookend the look, regardless of what color pants you're wearing. If you wear any darker color of footwear, the color will be different than the dress but there won't be a large contrast between the color of the dress and the shoes.

Maybe it's time to just put on the dress, pull out all of your jeans and boots, and start trying things on. It seems like doing will help you overcome the mental block. Good luck!

Kate, just to give you an idea on the cognac boots I have posted a picture. Many of you will recognize these as the same as a pair from a while back that I dyed red and had cut down to make really cute ankle boots. Wouldn't you know it, that's when cognac became an "in" colour. I scored this pair a few months back in a Miss Sixty Boutique during a shopping trip to NYC.

Angie's white suggestion is great, or light grey, but I'm obsessed with that color combination for summer. Do you wear the boots in summer too? I have some purple Ed Hardy sneakers that I adore when it warms up and would be fun with the dress/jeans combo.

I had the same thought as Angie in that I'd stay away from flares so that the flare of the dress isn't fighting with the flare of jeans. Other than that... MaryK has had me thinking purple is a neutral for several years now, so anything is fair game. What about army green, gray, black, brown, or white?

Oh, I love Rae's idea of army green! Have you considered whether you want a low contrast look or high contrast? Army green would be lower contrast but more interesting than black. Same (to a lesser extent) with a mid or dark gray. I would not choose to chop myself up with a dark dress, light jeans and dark boots but I know some people would wear that really well.

I have recently decided that I like this kind of dark purple with a bright turquoise, although that might be my love of all things turquoise taking over...

Ann; yes, I do wear boots all year round, so it would always be boots with the outfit.

Rae; I hear what you and Angie are saying about staying away from flared jeans, but I do what the jeans to fit nicely over the boots. Any suggestions for the army green or grey jeans

First of all, I love the dress! Gorgeous colour, and it will be very striking on you.

I think cognac boots could work for sure! You'd just have to bookend somehow. I prefer the idea of a faded jean (that doesn't fight with the purple -- the fading may have to be "just so.")

White boots and jeans would be awesome!!!

I like purple with grey like I am wearing here. Brown is another good color for deep purple and I like it better than black. Actually they say that purple eye shadow is very complimentary for brown eyes - so here you go
Faded denim can be fab too! Taupe or olive green?

How about cognac boots + a belt in a similar color, blue jeans of your choice, and turquoise jewellery? I'm thinking a sort of vaguely southwestern vibe.

Suz; I found a pair of 7 For All Mankind jeans online that are so faded, they look like white ones what got washed with a new pair of dark ones. The blue is pretty much just in the seams and other detailing. Will also try a clean white pair.

Sveta; I will definitely be trying grey with the purple.

Mander; I do have some belts that perfectly match the cognac boots. Any thoughts as to width, and how loose or tight to wear them?
