Steph, I know you are the headband queen around here and was wondering where you find your goods. I tried on a bunch of fascinators at Nordstrom the other day and loved them, but fascinators are pretty limited in their practicality. I'm just looking for headbands that I can wear day to day that are not boring or tacky looking.

I know J Crew usually has nice headbands. Any other recs?

Maya, take a look at France Luxe. They have interesting options and I've always had good luck with them.

Almost all of my headbands have come from either J. Crew or Nordstrom. I like the style of the J. Crew bands, but the Nordstrom ones, particularly the Tasha brand, tend to be more comfortable. The problem with the Nordstrom bands is that they can sometimes be very expensive. However, I find that there is usually a decent number of headbands on sale at any given time. I like the variety in the Tasha brand a lot, but I have several from Nordstrom that are different brands. Here is Tasha:

I really like the headband Sveta gave me for Secret Santa, and that came from etsy. It's so tough to find things on etsy, though (I know you agree), so that might not be easy unless you had a clear idea of what you wanted. One of my headbands is from Ann Taylor, but I'm not sure if they consistently carry them. I really like the one I got on our shopping trip to H&M, and Club Monaco and White House Black Market seem to carry them as well. I try to keep my eyes open in the accessory section of most stores, and I randomly find things I like.

Also call some of the high-end salons in your area...Ive found several really pretty beaded ones at 2 of the salons Ive gone to....

I second the recommendation to check out salons as well. I found my best headband in my salon because the hair dresser also understood what kind of a band would work with my (heavy) hair.

My suggestion was going to be Etsy as there are some shops that have fantastic feathered fascinators/headbands. I have a work colleague who does wear a flat feathered headband to work most days and it does look great on her.

I don't think I can deal with Etsy, but salons might be a good idea. Most of the headbands I tried on were from Tasha at Nordstrom, but they were just so dressy I couldn't justify them. The ones that weren't dressy didn't appeal to me. Beth, those are lovely headbands but way too expensive. I can't imagine spending more than $30. I will check out Club Monaco, J Crew, Anthropologie, and H&M.

Scarlet, what kind of headbands were recommended to you? Since my hair is the opposite of yours (yet strangely similar...), I guess whatever works for you wouldn't work for me. I think we have the same texture but mine is much finer and less full (boo).

I really wanted a peacock feather headband and I found a great one last year but didn't get it. Most of them are too dramatic and full for my taste. The one I tried had a smaller decoration and it laid flat against the head, which I liked.

Thanks for asking this Maya. A lot of headbands feel like they are squishing my head, and give me a headache after an hour. I'm going to check out that Nordstrom one.

Maya, I know you are creative....are you crafty? You could start with a basic comfy headband and embellish to your personal taste and specifications. Lots of potential materials: feathers, beads, fabrics, lace, sequins, ribbon, funky buttons, studs, etc.

I am not crafty at all, and don't really care much for crafty pursuits. They just always LOOK handmade to me, which is appealing to some but not to me.
