Ask Greg: Problem with login from forum front page

I don't know if this is just me or an issue others are having, but when I go to the forum's front page (http://youlookfab.com/welookfab/) and type my name into the space on the upper right that asks for my username, I am taken to a page that says there is an error and my username is invalid. That page has a username and password prompt, and when I enter the info there, it logs me in. Any ideas why I am having this issue?

(I think there might be a special forum for this type of question, but I'm not sure where it is, so I apologize for putting it here if that's wrong.)

Same with me, but I figured maybe I just registered wrong to start with and didn't realize it.

This is also something that happens to me. I can't quite figure out why I often have to go around a bit before I am logged in. I did ask Greg about this and he was able to log in easily with my info. Anyway I will be interested to hear how this works itself out.

This is a tough one because I can't reproduce the same error on my side.

Just to make sure I understand... you type the username AND password in the little panel at the top right of the page and instead of logging you in it takes you to the full page login form with the green background?

I had this problem at first too, but I felt kind of silly when I figured it out! Glad it's not just me!

You actually have to write ur username on top of the word "username". As soon as u click the box w the word "username" in it, it erases so u have an empty box to write in ur username

the circles below it are the password box.

I think it's just confusing bc the labels aren't consistent (ie saying both "username" and "password") but once you get it, it makes more sense!

For what it's worth, I have never encountered this problem. Perhaps it's a browser thing?

I just tried here at the bottom of this thread to log in. I put my name over the spot that says *username* and kept the bullets of the password as they were. I checked the box to remember me on this computer and then it sent me to the error screen that wiggles back and forth. There I re-entered my username and manually entered my password. It then allowed me to log on.

Thanks shell and Mo. I think I understand what is happening. Things will work fine as long as you type your password in that box (i.e. replace the current "dots" with your password). It seems that the initial dots are hiding an incorrect password, so if you type only your username and then click "log in" it doesn't accept your credentials.

I will look into this to see whether it can be improved.

Okay, I did exactly what Shell said, and it works (thanks Shell!!). Greg, what I was doing before was JUST typing in my username UNDER where it says username. In other words, I was typing it into the password box. I didn't realize that where it said username it was an actual box that you could type in. My assumption was that this screen just asked for a username, and then I would be forwarded to another screen for the password.

Maybe there is some way to change the interface a little so that it is more obvious that there is a spot to enter your username as well as your password?

Okay, so those bullets or dots in the password box are NOT my saved password in hidden form, but just dots for illustration? That is a little confusing as many websites keep my password in the database hidden if a very similar manner, using asterisks or such. Good to know why it wasn't working, though.

It will be your password hidden there after you have entered it and logged in using that form.

Oh, okay. Then maybe I did accidentally register the wrong password from the start . . . ha ha.

There is actually a bug, but it goes away once you've logged in once. I'll have this sorted out soon.

I think I have fixed this. You might need to log in once from the front page form using your username AND password, but after that the problem should go away.

Please let me know on this thread if you see anything odd.

Greg, I'm having another kind of problem. I'm logged in fine, and can read all the posts, but the colored dots are not correct. I'm getting gray dots on threads I haven't read, and no gray dots on threads I have. It's not a huge deal, but must be some sort of glitch. Could it be tracking the wrong person, perhaps Lynne with a capital L?

What Mo described is what happens to me. Thinking that I need to reset my password, I tried, but I cannot tell if I was successful. Tonight when I logged in the same thing happened again, taking me to the page that shakes. Logging in again from there was successful.

Sandy, the page shaking is normal. Log in after the shaking and then you should be sorted.

It is normal that the page shakes IF you type the username and password incorrectly on the first page.

Sandy, could you please try typing your username AND your password on that first page. If there are dots in the password field, please make sure that you type your correct password over those dots before pressing "Log In".

I think the problem is that your browser has stored an incorrect password for your username.

lynne, that is odd and I will look into it. How long have you had this particular problem?
