Ask Greg: photos not showing up?

I can't see certain photos - seem to be the ones posted quite recently. Older posts still show up fine. So on Angie's thread about glasses, I can see all photos but the two most recent ones. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Happening on IE 7 at work, and Safari 5.05 at home. iPhone (not the app) is fine.

It's happening for me too - and the photos on the front page (recent post with photos grid) is blank.

Thanks for letting us know about this. Angie and I can see images, so I think it must have something to do with the content delivery network we use (a CDN helps a website to deliver images quickly wherever in the world the person is browsing from).

It may have been a temporary glitch, so please let me know if this is still an issue. If it is I will turn off the CDN to see whether that helps.

Am I correct that this isn't affecting (1) the pictures in the blog and (2) profile pictures here in the forum. Is it ONLY affecting the image thumbnails?

I've seen this happen in the recent past while I was up in the middle of the night with insomnia. I see it again here tonight. I thought both times it must be that you are working on the website, for whatever help that info might be.

That is correct for me. And I can see the thumbnails, but only after clicking on the number next to one of the pictures. Then I can scroll through the pictures using "previous" and "next" with no issues. So it isn't a huge big deal, just odd.

If you are experiencing trouble viewing images, then please go to this test page I have created.

It will show 6 rows of thumbnails with 8 per row. Please check that all images appear, and that you can click the thumbnails in rows 5 and 6 to see a popup window with the full image.

Let me know what happens (even if everything works as advertised).

I wasn't having any picture issues to start with, but I did run through the test pics and they all work fine for me.

Okay, I can't see the first three photos in row 3 - only the little Xs show up. Everything else is fine!

I've been having the same trouble with not seeing thumbnails in forum posts, although when I click on the photo number, the pop-ups work fine. And in today's blog post (about capes) I am unable to see any photos. When the page is loading I can tell there should be photos, but nothing once it is fully loaded.

I just tried the test, and I can see all the thumbnails except for #1,2 and 4 in row 3. And when I click on the thumbnails in row 5 and 6, I either get an error message or the pop-up just sits and spins and never fully loads.

Alaskagirl, could you try again. I think that now rows 3 onwards should be broken.

So this is very likely an issue with the CDN.

Can you remember when you first saw this happen?

IE 7, part of rows of rows 3 and 4 not showing up, and all of row 5 missing. Nevermind I just looked again. It's inconsistent. Parts of rows 3-6 aren't showing up.

I can see them now! Some people's avatars were missing also and seem to be back. I don't have any idea what all of this means, but Greg, you're a genius!

That seemed to fix it, as I can now see forum thumbnails as well as the photos of all the gorgeous capes in today's blog post!

Thanks, but let's not forget that the "genius" created the problem in the first place.

Unfortunately what I have done now is a temporary solution. As I debug the issue with the CDN I might need to ask you to test some things and I'll get in touch when that's the case.

I have enabled the CDN on this test page only and I want to confirm that it causes the errors. If it loads fine the first time, please refresh the page a few times to ensure that the images are loading ok.

Ok so I'm no longer at work (won't be back until Tuesday). At home using Safari 5.0.5, I see all of row 1-2, and only parts of row 3-6.
