Ask Greg: one tweak?

I love today's changes. It's been fun hunting for the new toys... It's all great and travels even further down the 'intuitive' route of the website being designed to do everything you could wish for.

Just one query about the search boxes, which have changed very slightly. When you click on it, the search box still has eg 'Search the forum' written in it, which has to be deleted manually. Can that happen automatically?

I think that is because she is on the iPhone app. When you post on the app, I think the status and badges don't transfer over.

I was going to ask the same thing about the search boxes, Polly:-)

The new YLF looks fantastic Angie and Greg. I love how subtle tweaks can have such a big impact on the general feel of a site. I am very smitten with the rounded corners used for the page numbers, "Submit Post" etc.!

I love how much information there is on the front page now.

A tweak I've wondered about is concerning losing my commnet on the blog. Sometimes I think I am signed in to the blog but it turns out I am not yet and I leave a comment on Angie's post. I'm taken to a screen asking me to sign in, I do, and then my comment has disappeared into cyber space. I'm wondering if that comment can still be there after I'm redirected to sign in? I've tried using the back arrow and my comment box is no longer filled.

Another thing I've wondered is if we could have spell check here?

Thanks Polly, the search box issue is taken care of. I will add an indication later of what you're actually searching (right now it looks identical whether you're in the blog or forum, for example).

Polly, what do you mean by "coming up as expected" for "new in the forum". Do you see an issue there?

Roles and badges etc. SHOULD transfer over between iPhone app and YLF. They are one and the same. The only exception is that the iPhone only displays realtime related roles. So I'll look into Janet's status.

Sandy, I'm not sure I can do the thing where you don't lose the comment when signing in, but I'll think about it. The easiest way to get spellcheck is to use a browser that supports it. For example, I'm using Chrome (my favorite browser!) and it is corrected me several times during this post alone.

Greg, I thought there was an issue with the 'new on the forum' section - because new threads didn't seem to have come up when I was first looking at it. Eg this thread wasn't on there just after I'd posted it. Since then, though it seems to be as expected ie new threads are appearing in this section. Haven't checked it rigorously, though. And if course I don't know if you apply particular criteria to what appears there.

Oh, I see. Every new topic is posted on the front page *except* ones that are in the "Other" category. So that explains why this one didn't appear there.

Also, I often come online in the morning in the UK when there haven't been many posts and especially new threads for a while.

I think all of that confused me (the threads on the home page seemed relatively old).

Sorry to be a nuisance. All clear now and looking great! I love the rounded corners too; gives me such a sense of pleasure each time I click on them!

And the 'back to top' button, which I wasn't bothered about when first suggested actually makes a huge difference to my experience on the site, especially using an iPad. So much quicker to navigate around.
