I have been thinking of upgrading this pleather jacket (#1). It fits well, and I like the style. My first question: to upgrade or not.

If so, here are the contenders:
2-5. June moto jacket from Nordstrom (not available on line). It is expensive, however it is still less than the leather jackets I used to buy for myself in the 90s (and which I still wear -- thinking of my brown trench coat).

6-7. Wine jean leather jacket from Gap. A few hundred less than the June jacket. Nice leather, but the color and style do not seem as durable as the moto jacket, which is timeless.

Thank you for your honest opinions!

ETA -- I just purchased this one from Macy's a few hours ago. It is a different style and fits really well. It was even more than the June jacket! From G Star Raw. But I got a 10% Macy's visitor discount so that helped defray the sales tax at least. I felt that since the pleather jacket is so great, why repeat the style, so this one's more of a racing/Yamaha moto jacket rather than a Harley style. Did I do the right thing? Check out the great sleeve length! Color is a blue-black but reading more grey on the monitor. It's quite dark, almost black actually.

To me the Gap one seems almost western with the flap pockets and their placement. I'd upgrade to the spendy one (sorry!) or stick with your pleather. Those both rock!

Love 2-5 on you. It's a great timeless moto that fits really well. So if you can afford it, I'd upgrade.

No Gap jean jackets! I have one of theirs in chalky white and it never seems right over an outfit I can wear true denim jackets and they're fine, but not this one. So, I'd never recommend that one for anyone.

I like the June on you though Leather should be around a looong time, so that might justify the price tag?

Your pleather IS adorable on you so I'd try to stay closer to its styling.

I really like your pleather jacket! It's going to be difficult to find something that looks just as good. I think the Nordstrom one comes close to it, while the Gap jacket does not look as good.

Upgrade or not? I think it all depends on feelings towards this jacket. I personally cannot make myself buy a pleather jacket, they just never feel right for me - and a good quality leather makes me swoon! For it may be different...
I like the color of the Gap one but not the style. The black one is gorgeous.

June, all the way.

My only hesitation would be with the colour. If you are okay with it being black, then I say - go for it. It looks beautiful quality and the fit seems good to me, and you know you've loved the pleather.

I say it not just because, you know, black as we age and all that, but also because you've been so enjoying tonal dressing lately. It might be easier to use a leather jacket in a tonal look if it were a different colour or neutral.

I like the pleather one too! Were you going to try the Theory one? It's not really outerwear... I'm on my phone at the cabin so can't see these pics too well but can't wait to see them tomorrow.

I like the expensive black one. I would pass on the Gap one.

So, for me a black leather jacket is an essential. (And I don't like pleather). So if it were me, I would make the splurge although I might wait a bit for a sale or ebay stalk it. But I guess it depends on how much you would wear it, and whether you think you'd keep it for a long time.

I like the black moto. What is wrong with a black moto leather jacket? Am I missing something? Have we cast them out? Just curious.

Honestly, I love your original first coat the most! It's so Marlon Brando "Wild One" but in a girly way!

Are you thinking of wearing the jacket with dresses/skirts? If so, I'd say you might want something more cropped. If not, the June looks great. Do not like the neckline of the GAP jacket on you.

I prefer the length of your pleather jacket. Whilst I love the styling and quality of the June jacket the slightly longer length gives me pause (however, this could be the effect of the tucked top in pic 2)

I love the collar on the June one. It is not as cropped as your pleather one. I have seen some leather jackets in a bigger fit lately from some designers. But the ones I've seen were bigger all over, more oversized. Not sure what your goal is.

Zap, we are not against black motos. I'm certainly not, at any rate. I happen to love them! But. It all depends on what look one is going for and one's colouring. On you, a black moto is a no-brainer. Those with dark hair have fewer problems wearing black, IMO. I don't mean blondes can't look great in black. Obviously, Angie and Deborah give the lie to that idea! And I love to wear black myself sometimes. Just that it's a bit tougher for a blonde to do it well, and although Denise has all the cool anybody could desire, she's a fairly low-contrasty type person who has been enjoying tonal dressing lately.

If she wants black, I know she'll wear it brilliantly! It's just a question of checking in about that.

Honestly, I'd say keep looking. The black is classic, but I think you can find one that fits even better. The GAP jacket is just not in the same league - both the fit and color look just a little off somehow. For that kind of money, I'd say hold out for one that makes your heart skip a beat!

I like the June a lot, and I saw it in store the other day and had to stop and pet it... but I think it fits better on you closed than open - and going by your pleather jacket, it looks like you'll want to wear it open.

I don't think the jeans style is you, though. I vote to go for that classic moto look you have in the pleather. Luckily, it is a popular style, so you should be able to find something perfect.

I like the pleather the best. The style, the shorter length - and the fact that no animals were killed to make that jacket all add up to a winner to me! Hahaha! I'm such a downer aren't I? - and a hypocrite as I wear leather shoes and carry leather handbags. But seriously, I do like the pleather one best - I'd pass on the the other two and keep looking! (I don't think the black leather one looks all that great when it is open - and I'm assuming that you'd wear it that way quite a bit of the time?) Just say NO and walk away from the GAP jacket.

I like the one you currently own. I don't care for the style of the Gap one at all. Just wondering if you might consider waiting until the 'next new leather jacket silhouette' comes around (that Anna hinted at). If your pleather one is in good shape that is. It seems a shame to copy it exactly because you won't get much of a wow factor from the expenditure, just the better quality that you will enjoy.

If however you want the die hard classic model in leather, the one you've tried on here looks amazing. I think you wear mostly pants/jeans and the longer length has got to be more classic than the cropped ones we've been wearing for a while. I can still remember my super cropped leather bomber that I had in the 80's. Big shouldered and boxy it was! Then the nineties brought us long and lean leathers (as you know). So how's that for a stream of consciousness ramble? Not sure how much I helped!

Thanks Claire. Maybe I am just too eager to get a leather jacket. I do like this 3rd one but Macy's has a generous return policy, not quite as good as Nordstrom, but good. In case I change my mind again.

Yeah - I like the 3rd one much better, though I can't really tell what the collar looks like in pic 1 - do you like the way it lays? I think the fit looks great!

FWIW:

I vote pass on the lot. The best fitting jacket is #1 (the original pleather). The collar on the June is overwhelming to my eye. Your pleather jacket has a MUCH better shape collar for your body type, frame and neck length. The other two are not 10s.

I have a June leather jacket so I know how much they cost, and how beautiful the quality is. Hard to resist! Mine is 6 years old and still going strong. Hold out a little longer Denise, and find one that is absolutely KILLER.

I'm very partial to 8-10. I love the style (and your description of it is so great--more Yamaha racing than Harley), and the fit is beautiful on you. I especially like the back view better than the June jacket, because of where it falls (just a tad shorter,* so I can envision it going better with dresses as well as pants) and because of the waist seam and angled peplum-like piece. It's very flattering. I like the dark steely gray color, too. Are you keeping it?
*eta: I guess the gray jacket isn't shorter in the back--it's just the way it fits through the waist that I really like!
