Ask Angie: will metallic shoes have staying power?

This is a question for Angie or anyone who feels qualified to answer. Or who just wants to say something for the fun of it.

So, I've been planning on getting a pair of flat oxfords for a few years. This year might be the year. I'm actively looking. I was thinking light brown or burgundy, but I keep seeing shiny metallic ones that I really like. I am tempted. The only thing is, metallic shoes seem like they have burst suddenly on the scene, which makes me wonder if they will disappear equally suddenly. Normally I don't worry about this sort of thing, because I'm never particularly bleeding edge with my clothes, and I tend to wear them out before they feel frumpy. But I like good quality shoes and I keep them for many years, and I don't want to feel like they are wildly out of style in a short time. (I wouldn't have this worry with burgundy or brown -- as far as I'm concerned, those colours are timeless). What do you think?

I've been wearing metallic shoes for over 30 years. I think they are timeless. That said, I think the mirror-bright silver ones that are being sold right now might have a little less staying power.

I'm not sure about the super shiny ones, but I think the duller, more matte metallics will stick around. At least I think there's always a couple in stores.

Honestly I don't worry too much about shoes dating because I destroy them. If I like and wear a pair a lot, most of the time the heels are completely trashed in 2 years. I can usually have them replaced once before other parts start to go. So, 4 years of hard wear is how long my shoes should last. That's not really long enough for something, unless it's a flash in the pan, to disappear off the streets forever. I do walk a lot, but I also have lots of shoes.

I got the mirror Ivanka loafers last year and have already passed them on. They just did not fit in with my style. I am not as sci-fi as I thought I could be.

What Diana said. I think metallics are as classic as black and brown.

I reckon as a colour, metallics are a classic. The same of the show might get dated though.

I think metallics, in general, are classic. Like Adelfa and Diana said, I think the high shine mirror ones won't be around as long, but a softer metallic should fine.

I agree that the more muted metallics will prevail. I sure hope so, because I love love love a metallic shoe!

OK, so I may give them a miss, then, because it's the super mirror-shiny ones that I like so much. I think it's the sci-fi vibe that I like. When I said "metallic", I should have been more specific.

What's a short time? If you wore them a lot for two years would that be enough? I don't know, what trends have really fizzled out super fast lately? I love the look of that kind of shoe too but already invested my out of the ordinary dollars in the sam edelman snakeskin booties

Metallic sandals, gold or silver or bronze, will always be fashionable. Flats, I think, will also always be acceptable. However, the super shiny copper oxfords and aluminum foil pumps I got this year, I say not so much. Hehe. But you notice I got them.

Here I was wondering whether my burgundy oxfords from last winter would date by next year and should I have picked the metallic version for staying power...

I agree with a lot of the comments above. Metallic can be timeless, but the shiny silver that is popular right now has actually been popular for about ten years. Its now hitting its peak, and will probably subside by next summer. I would suggest getting a really nice pair of Oxfords that you want, and then also getting a cheaper silver pair to have some fun with!
