Ask Angie: Which shoes/boots with a leather dress?

Hi Angie! A friend (really and truly, I swear it is not me!) just purchased this Theory leather dress. The salesperson told her to wear tall black leather boots with it, but my friend fears she will look like she's about to jump onto her Harley and ride off into the sunset.

Here's the dress. What footwear would you suggest?

Not Angie obviously, but can I play? I would pair it with black suede footwear. I'm thinking ankle boots with some slouch.

Yes, I agree with Z - black suede sounds fab. Or some kind of leather booties (not patent or too shiny) with some texture detail - ruching, pleats, etc. Or maybe the SW 50/50 boots - not too much leather!

I'm glad you asked this question because this was always my dilemma with leather pants. In that case, it becomes one continuous line of leather which always felt sort of weird.

I'm very interested in Angie's take on this, I have been hunting (probably an unfortunate term) for a leather pencil skirt which I plan to wear with black suede and patent heeled oxfords or burgundy suede courts. I would avoid flat black leather unless the footwear did not pass above the ankle bone and patterned hose are added to create texture.

Oof I am envious, a leather shift is really high up on my wishlist of items this season. I'm no expert, but I'd say any footwear that isn't the same textured leather as the dress would look great. So suede, patent, fabric etc would offer a bit of contrast to the rubbery flat-blackness of the dress.

Not Angie either, but had to comment since the dress is so wicked...
I agree, no leather shoes in same texture as the dress--much too "matrix" looking.
I agree with the idea of suede to contrast textures, or even go total contrast with something metallic instead.

Nothing wrong with the suggestions given above, but my vote would be for a punch of color in the shoes....I have no idea if that's your friend's cup of tea, but I can see that dress with some purple or red pumps...

I think something leather in the footwear COULD work as long as it's very sleek and in a clearly non-biker type style, and at a height that's below the calf. Though I think something non-leather and with a punch of color would be best.
