Ask Angie: What's wrong with these?

I posted the blouse and the dress a while ago, but havn't decided if I should keep or toss yet. I thought your opinion might be helpful by telling me what is wrong with these items. Is it the color, the siluette, the fit, the styling or what else? Can I make the dress and the blouse work? How? Or are they ment to pass on to another wardrobe?

The dress is adorable. I would hold on to that if you are still enjoying wearing it. The top is too wide and short for you.

Both the top and dress give you a total hourglass shape as you are showing them (the dress with built in waist and the top as you have belted) and maybe that is not your comfort zone?
The dress looks fantastic on you but is it too sweet with the navy and white? I think you are liking an edgier look (but correct me if I am off base).
Maybe pairing the dress with a different underlayer - striped t? I like it on you but you have to fell great in your clothes so this might be a gut check thing.

Are you back from NYC? Hope your trip was wonderful if so.

I made some fun style discoveries in NYC and some of them being exactly the need for a bit of edge and contrast (putting different style elements together for surprise). Being a bit out of my comfort zone makes sense. I'll check if I have a striped T and see how that turns out.

NYC was superb! Both in terms of shopping, work, meandering, absorbing the Manhatten feel. I'll make some posts later, but I need to catch up with some work and home related stuff (and preparations for the big national celebration of the constitution day :-)) And I stuck to both budget and shopping list!

Sounds great! My family will be celebrating 17 Mai next week too although in a highly Americanized manner lol but I will be making Norwegian pancakes for breakfast, and we attend a party that evening. No fantastic parading I am afraid.

I want to like the blouse, but I do find the sleeves just a little overwhelming for your height.

My favorites are #2, 4, and 5. I really like the dark jeans with the dark pumps. I think the top in #1 and 2 is has too much fabric to belt it. I really love the dress, but would like it better on its own, or with a light layer underneath. Maybe something in a white silky fabric? The oxford type shirt seems a little too stiff. Hope that helps a little:) You have a lovely figure, btw!

I agree with others about the top, but I love the dress, especially in that last photo. I'd never think to put a top under it along with tights but it looks excellent. I *think* what isn't working for me are those rope ties at the shoulders (relative to how you've layered the dress, otherwise I like them). Maybe you could replace them with some thick edgy chain or leather, untied?

@christieanne: so great to hear about your americanized 17th of May! Do you have blueberry jam, suger and bacon to go with the pancakes? I din't know you had norwegian relatives oh - you have to post some wiw's from that day!

@modgrl, angie, jilly and echo: super input! Sleeve and height do not talk together - great to know! The blouse will happily be passed on to someone else And the dress will be worn as soon as the weather gets warmer - and I'll try some different layerings. It is just 45-50 degrees Farenheit (6-10 degrees celsius), so summer is far away.

Meredith & teeandcee: I really appreciate your honesty! What a great idea to swap the ropes with leather! A chain might be too much for me, but I'll definately keep it in mind because I love the idea of contrasting dots with chain

The blouse is I think too stiff and short for that much volume.

The dress is very pretty on you. The only real issue I see again are the shoulder ties. If you can swap in some grosgrain ribbon or leather thongs, it will be possible to put a denim jacket over the dress or even a thicker cardigan. Also, the way the shoulder is cut, I suspect layering under means selecting a fine, fitted knit top, or a thin tailored top. Anything else ends up too bulky on top of the cords and the angled-in armhole. So maybe a white layering T-shirt to start with, or some stripes to enhance the nautical feel when you do go with the original cords?
