What to Wear Overtop of This Dress?

Hello, this is my first post on this website, and I'd like to ask a question. I'm 14, and just bought a dress for my 8th grade graduation dinner. When I bought it, both my friends and my mom (who tends to be really picky on these sort of things), both loved it. Now, my mom's telling me it's too "skimpy" in the back, and I need something to cover it. My style tends to be a bit more edgy and "tomboyish", so when she showed me a bunch of shawls, they didn't look very nice in my opinion. The dinner is not really what you'd call over the top fancy, but my friends are all wearing cocktail dresses, and matching it up with more casual shoes like sneaker-wedges, or combat boots. I personally have always loved the look of pairing Converse with a dress, so I may wear my black hi-top wedges. I'll also possibly wear some sort of chunky necklace to go along with it. But it would be a great help if you could give some input on what to wear to cover up the back a bit, that still fits in with my style.

It seems a shame to buy a gorgeous dress with a defining feature like an open back just to cover it. While I don't have any specific suggestions, have you considered something with either a sheer or a lace back? Something like that would "cover" the back without covering it up.

I agree with echo (a shame to cover it up), but if you must, I suggest you go with something like this sheer(ish) shrug, like this:

I was going to suggest a tuxedo style jacket but like Clara T's idea of a sheer jacket of some kind. I wonder if there is such a thing as a sheer black moto jacket.

Here's another thought: if your friends were planning to casualize their cocktail dresses with shoes, you could do it with your jacket instead. So you could wear a denim jacket (maybe even a moto jacket, as Joy suggested) -- or even leather or faux leather if that wouldn't be too hot -- and instead of wearing your Cons, you might want to wear a more traditional shoe (to offset the nontraditional jacket). So -- either pointy toed pumps or a wedge sandal of some kind. Along with whatever jewellery you were going to wear.

Ok here goes, I am a bit older than you so forgive me if I am way off base with my suggestion

How about a black sleeveless jacket/vest (like the Zara one in the picture), and worn open so you can see the detail of the skirt of the dress, and wear your wedge sneakers and a statement necklace.
