Ask Angie: What to match with a navy tunic

Over the past couple of months the colour navy is appealing more and more to me as a neutral. I have my eye on a couple of navy tunics for layering into autumn, but haven't bought them as I don't know what colour bottoms to wear with them. My choices are black leggings, black skinny jeans or dark wash jeggings.

What would your suggestion be?

Fi - I think Angie has a blog post on Navy too. You can combine with both black and jeans. If you do black, I'd consider lightening the look with a lighter scarf or bright jewelry, shoes, purse - red, yellow, white, some shades of green come to mind.

I should have done a search first. I wonder if Angie's response means that I could wear a navy dress with very dark plum/almost black tights and my black boots...

What about khaki colored pants... I could see a navy tunic with one of the new skinny cargoes.

Hmmm, good suggestion, but (tinsy little secret) I am not really that keen on the skinny cargoes, plus skinny trousers very rarely work on me because I have calf, knee, thigh ratios that mean even with hemming they bag around the knees (something Ele pointed out to me when I tried on the BR Martin skinnies).

I like navy with lighter wash denim, too- it's a little more of a contrast. Also with browns or gray.

Grey is a really good suggestion. Grey skinny jeans perhaps? What colour boots?

I just tried on a navy tunic (Laura's cream from Kenneth Cole at Nordstrom's, only in navy) and I love the way it looked with my white skinnies. I plan to wear with boots for the fall. Would white jeans will work for you? I could also wear it with my lighter wash jeans.

Tara, I wish white jeans would work for me, but living in London they would just get too dirty. For me they just aren't practical. I have only just found a pair of black skinnies that work for me and the brand doesn't come in white.

I am sounding really contrary aren't I...

Londonkiwi - can you elaborate a little on your comment about your bagging-at-the-knee problem? I think I might have the same thing, and I want to know how you figured this out, and what exactly it means!

I have run into this problem with a number of skinny styles and it wasn't until the LondonYLF meet up when I tried on the BR skinnies - which fit great everywhere that Ele hit the nail on the head. Basically, the trousers seem to catch on the tops of my calf, which causes them to bag at the knee - they don't seem to hang straight down from my thigh - stupid NZ body...

Thanks! I wonder if this is my problem too? I have very large calves, and short legs from knee to foot. I just posted a pic of some new jeans I'm trying - they're boot cuts, but still seem to bag in the knees! Hmmmm ....

I have nothing further to add to these great suggestions, Fi. I LOVE ink blue with black and cream. There is a beautiful ink blue tunic at BR at the moment. You'd look fab in ink blue!

I have a navy shirtdress/tunic and I do it with black and dark denim skinnies/leggings - I think that would look fine!

Thanks - great article! I like those kick flares. Even though I have hips and thighs, I prefer pants that are slimmer in the thigh and boot cut on the bottom - which seems to be the definition of kick flare. Whenever I buy "curvy" pants, they seem to bag under the butt and make that whole area look bigger/wider.

I feel like I need an engineering degree just to buy jeans!

No problem. I am not a skinny mini, but prefer my trousers tighter through the hips and tighs too - the curvy styles at Gap have never worked for me.

I really like Jess Cartner-Morley's "How to Dress" articles, they are really informative and straight forward to follow.
