Ask Angie: What shoes to wear with a maxi dress

Hello! I just bought a really cute sleeveless black maxi dress with a lace overlay and I was wondering what kind of shoes to pair with it other than the predictable gladiator sandal. It is a dress that can be dressed up or down, so advice on shoes for both ways will be really helpful!

It would be easier to respond with a photo, but I would suggest simple flats, possibly with pointy toes.

can you post a photo of the dress? Also, what is the weather that you will be wearing it in? Simple sandals looks best with a maxi but since it's snowing where I am that seems like a long way off. I don't wear maxis in the winter.

Maxi dresses seem very boho to me unless they are formal gowns, so to dress it down you might wear earthy sandals in a brown, carry a brown hobo bag, and wear a casual jacket like denim or distressed leather moto. Maybe add an olive or tan utility belt if you can.

and thank you all for the suggestions! and i live in southern California, where the weather is very mild, even in the winter. Some days (especially lately) Its warm enough to wear sandals, and other days it gets chilly (60's average which is chilly for us lol)

I am in so cal too and I wear mine all year round, summer with sandals, cooler evenings even in summer I wear flats, and when it is colder, like into the 40's at night I wear booties with opaque tights. Tops vary from denim jacket to faux fir to cardigans. I love maxi skirts and dresses, and find them very versatile..especially black, but other solid colors too.

I love the dress. Depending on how you like to accessorize I would think a pair of low cowboy boots would work fabulously with this. And I like the sandals the model is wearing too for height. I would stay away from ballet flats because to my eye they very easily can make one look school girlish. But it depends on the pair really.

oh i like the cowboy boots suggestion! i hadn't thought of that! I did like the wedge sandals the model was wearing and i liked how it was accessorized for a little bit dressed up. i'm 5'6" (very average height) so depending on where the dress hem falls I have to chose wedge heights wisely

What a pretty dress! I don't have much to offer with regard to shoe style, but I just want to say that I think you're right on track to watch how different heel heights affect where the hem falls. I am very short (5'2") and have found that I generally look best if the hem goes almost all the way to the floor--so I can't wear very high heels with anything maxi. But maybe if you are of average height it won't make as much of a difference?
